Practical symfony 1.2 for Doctrine - second edition ReviewIf you're just starting out with symfony and doctrine, or are just wanting a refresher this is the main guide to get. It is the print version of the Jobeet tutorial that is available over at the symfony website [...], with a few added bells and whistles like an index.
Practical symfony contains enough information for a beginner to start their first project and work up to some of the more advanced features without getting so detailed as to overwhelm the reader.
If you are unsure whether to use symfony for your next project, I'd recommend to check out the online version before purchasing. However, if you've jumped in head first, grab your copy and help support the symfony framework - I'm sure you'll find it useful!

Practical symfony 1.3 & 1.4 for Doctrine ReviewHaving a hard copy of a computer book in hand when learning a new technology is a great thing - when the book is great, that is. However, Practical Symfony is not a great book, and given that it can be downloaded from the Symfony site, I do not feel after buying the book that it was work investing in a hard copy.
Symfony is a decent framework for building a Web application, and as lead developer of the Symfony project, Potencier certainly has the expertise to provide correct information about the subject. However, Potencier's expert knowledge often gets in the way of teaching the technology, and important subjects are glossed over and some items (such as how to display the debug toolbar) that may have seemed too trivial for inclusion by the author. For instance, the Doctrine_Query object is given half a page of discussion instead of the full chapter it deserves. One simply cannot get an adequate understanding of Symfony and its integration with Doctrine from this book alone. I find myself using my Google-fu and reading pages of online documentation for both Symfony and Doctrine just to figure out how to do basic things that I could have done easily outside of the framework. A book should effectively minimize this, but this one doesn't.
Practical Symfony is written in a very linear format. It is structured much like a SAMs "Teach Yourself... in 24 Hours" book, and suffers from the same structural defect as the worst books in that series. If you have 24 days to devote an hour or two to each day to a chapter, and you think up your own simple project from scratch and follow the book's process, you will learn the basics of the technology. However, if you are like me, and are trying to take over an existing project written by someone else and extend its functionality, this approach does not work. For working programmers, books that have solid chapters that can be read coherently by themselves are much more practical and deliver far more value, which is not the case with this book.
That being said, what ultimately cripples this book's usefulness is its abysmal index, which appears to have been generated by computer and not subsequently reviewed or tested by an actual human beings. For instance, there are two entries side by side for "Web Debug Toolbar" and "web debug toolbar", which point to different pages. This case insensitivity problem is indicative as well of the numerous capitalization errors in the text of this book.
Finally, this book is a translation from French, and sometimes the resulting English is cumbersome or incorrect. One frustrating example is the use of the word "serialization" to describe the process of Doctrine writing data from a PHP object to a database. While this process is conceptually similar to serialization. I found it highly confusing to see the term used in that context, which to me implies the use of the serialize() function or a comparable routine such as json_encode().
My conclusion is that if you want this book, download the PDF from the Symfony Web site. If you want to support the project, click the "Donate" button. Learning Joomla 1.5 Extension Development ReviewExcellent beginning book on writing Joomla extensions. He concentrates on devloping a component extension, but also has you create modules and plugins.
So that you know how to judge my reaction to this book, here's my background: I have good HTML/CSS skills, have installed a few Joomla site, and written a couple of templates. I've been a programmer for many years but on languages quite different from php. My php skills are still pretty new. I understood the concept of object oriented programming but hadn't much experience with it. I knew what MVC stood for, but that was about it.
It would have been nice to know more OOP, but I managed.
The MVC was very sensible and a much cleaner way to deal with php. That was fine to pick up.
After finishing the book, I was able to create my own component extension.
You are going to want to know some HTML, some php and joomla before you try this. If you don't know oop, I'd recommend taking a quick tutorial on it first. Killerphp.com has a quick practical one.
The only complaint I have is that I wish he had created an appendix or footnotes with the Joomla commands and their parameters. While he explains what's needed for the extension example, it's sometimes hard to know what all the parameters are used for which makes it difficult to go beyond something very similar to his example without finding another resource. You can check out the joomla dev site for details or look at the files themselves, but that's a little TOO detailed!Learning Joomla 1.5 Extension Development OverviewA rapid and easy-to-follow introductory tutorial to help you use PHP code to create your first Joomla! extensions: modules, components, and plugins. PHP Cookbook: Solutions and Examples for PHP Programmers ReviewThis is my first O'Reilly book in the "Cookbook" series. At first I thought this book would probably contain the code and instructions for building a couple of web applications such as a shopping cart or a blog engine. This isn't that book. Rather it provides the reader with code snippets that can be used as building blocks for all kinds of applications. If I had to describe this book in one sentence I would say it is as if the author took down all the "Hmm..., I wonder how that is done?" questions and created an answer key.
One thing I like about this book is that the authors don't waste the first few chapters trying to teach or give an overview of the language. Instead they hop right into the usage of the language that relates to real world stuff.
So here is a brief overview. The book covers PHP 5 and goes over many of the new and improved features. The first six chapters provide recipes for more basic subjects (strings, numbers, dates & times, arrays, variables, and functions. Again, this isn't an intro to PHP, that is another book such as Programming PHP from O'Reilly. This is that book you reach for once you have moved from PHP basics and are ready to build some real world stuff.
By chapter seven the authors are discussing classes and objects. I like using classes when coding in C++, so this is a good chapter for those who like OOP. The next nine chapters go over web stuff starting out with basic things like cookies, forms, and databases. Then the authors go into more advanced areas like session management, XML, automation and web services (REST, SOAP, Mail, FTP, LDAP, and DNS to name a few).
The next chapter [17] is on the topic of graphics. This is a cool chapter if you like to create dynamic images. Things like creating a button image on the fly, or generating charts. Graphics are great to have a knowledge of because everyone likes graphical presentation of data and this chapter can help you get there.
Chapter 18 is on security and encryption which I found rather helpful. No one wants there web application to be the link that allows data to be compromised, and this chapter deals with many of those problem areas. Chapter 19 covers localization, chapter 20 is on debugging and testing. The debugging section does a great job of getting a person setup with the tools they need to properly debug an application including creating your own exception class. This is an outstanding chapter that every programmer can appreciate since every application needs debugging.
The remaining chapters cover performance tuning, regular expressions, files, directories, command line PHP, PERL and PECL. Being a Perl guy I found it interesting to see how the authors utilized regular expressions in PHP. And the chapter on command-line PHP was outstanding; I thought the recipe for creating a PHP command shell was pretty cool.
CONCLUSION

This book is like having the answer key to most of the random questions a person comes up with when writing code. I found this book to be very useful, it will be one of those references that I keep close, and gets very little shelf time. It is a solid book. It is hard to say what parts I liked best because this is one of those books that you like and must have, but then as time goes on and you use it more and more its value grows. Drupal 6 Performance Tips ReviewThis book is supposed to provide: "crucial performance-related information for users of all experience levels."
That is false. The book is a ripoff of content from the main Drupal site drupal dot org. Nearly the entire book consists of, here is module X, go download it from drupal dot org and enable it, oh and let's pad the pages by giving you the enabling steps for each module we suggest.
The book devotes 50, count 'em 50 pages to how to update Drupal. This is ridiculous. All of that information is available in the Drupal handbook pages online or in the API docs or in more concise format in books such as 'Using Drupal' which will give you a lot more value.
You would be better off to join the high-performance group on drupal dot org (Google for high performance group drupal, it is the first result, since Amazon removes links) and read the drupal dot org handbook pages.

Rapid Application Development With CakePHP (Volume 1) ReviewI bought this book for the kindle. I would not say that it is formatted with the Kindle in mind, but it is readable. Screenshots are too small to see.
The material covered is really the basic highlights for CakePHP. I have several books, and this author does not dive very deep into the code or the reasons why he is doing certain things. The author does conform to the standards, which are important for CakePHP and explains these well. The author assumes the reader has a firm understanding of PHP and OOP.
In spite of the shortcomings, I would have to say this is a nice quick reference to have handy on your Kindle. If you want to know more about the nuts and bolts of CakePHP and have more time to read a longer book, check out the book from PackIT.
I gave the book four stars. It is a quick read, does not cost much and the Author (who is clearly experienced in the technology) gives several important insights into programming with CakePHP that I have not read in other texts.Rapid Application Development With CakePHP (Volume 1) OverviewThis book was written by a web developer for web developers. It is written in a fashion where it will be useful for beginning web developers and also help advanced web developers learn more.To ensure you are not completely lost, knowledge of PHP, Javascript, HTML, and CSS are required. Symfony 1.3 Web Application Development ReviewI purchased this book around the beginning of November. Construction and print quality are both very good. From a writing standpoint, the book is easy to read and conversational. There are some typos (I've found around 10) but none of them are in code samples which is important. I'll be submitting these back to the publisher so later versions are corrected.
For those learning Symfony, this book is a mixed bag. Beginning with the positives, you will learn the basic approach to developing in Symfony. Areas I particularly liked include instruction on project setup (chap1&2), forms (chap4) and optimization (chap9).
On the downside, Propel is the ORM that is referenced throughout this text. There are virtually no code samples in regard to Doctrine. This is particularly egregious because Doctrine is the default ORM library for Symfony as of version 1.3. As Fabien Potencier (creator of Symfony) puts it, "As Doctrine is the future of symfony, we decided to make it the default choice when creating a new project". Don't assume the book contains code samples for both. It doesn't.
Like myself, you may find yourself using the Symfony website/forums A LOT to get additional information on topics. This is because the book is somewhat light on details. I would liken it much more in-line with the Visual QuickStart books that Peachpit produces. The idea being, get something up-and-running quickly.
The book does not cover Unit and Functional testing using the lime Testing Framework; a built-in library. This is a significant omission. Automated testing is an integral component of today's RAD programming frameworks (ala Rails).
As for Symfony 1.3 specific information, they do a pretty good job. For instance, the use of csrf_secret for securing forms is discussed. However, 1.3 offers easy ways to use Swiftmailer to send emails. This is not covered. The old pattern is used.
If you are going to use Propel and are a Symfony beginner, you'll be in good shape with this book. Otherwise, I'd say wait for 'Practical symfony 1.4 for Doctrine' or use the website's tutorials. The Symfony framework itself is a wonderful product. I've enjoyed using it immensely.Symfony 1.3 Web Application Development OverviewThis book is an example driven tutorial that takes you through the process of building Model-View-Controller-based web applications. You will create and develop an online store application. It also covers best practices for better and quicker application development.This book is for PHP web developers who want to get started with Symfony 1.3. If you are already using Symfony 1.0 or are new to Symfony, you will learn how to use it in the best way to produce better applications faster.Basic knowledge of Object Oriented design and ORM will be quite helpful.

Pro Drupal Development ReviewIf you are looking for a "this is how up install and run Drupal, these are the modules that are available" look elsewhere (the Drupal site, for instance) - this book is about writing Drupal modules how Drupal works internally.
But, if you are an aspiring Drupal module writer or just want to better understand how Drupal works internally or want to be able to tinker with existing modules you CANNOT go wrong with this book. It is very detailed, is incredibly well laid out and written. The examples are spot on. Very easy to understand and teaches you an incredible amount. I'm reading it cover to cover. I am about half way through and I couldn't be happier. It has answered pretty much every question I had about developing Drupal modules and extending existing functionality. I found some of the tutorials on the Drupal web site lacking in detail, this book IS the detail I was looking for. It covers Drupal 5.0.Pro Drupal Development Overview

Drupal 7 First Look ReviewI've had the chance to read another Packt Publishing title called Drupal 7 First Look by Mark Noble. I thought I would put down a few thoughts.
I lead Drupal administration and development training on a fairly regular basis and I'm always a little sensitive to instructional books. It's not easy teaching through literature and it's especially difficult to connect the right learner to the right level of literature to be useful to learning. That has been my complaint with many of the Packt titles in the last two years. The top notch authors are very attractive to Drupal learners, but those authors present their concepts with an assumption that readers have the right background. With Noble's book, the intended audience is clearly defined and makes this book more effective that the other's I've read. I have considered including this book as part of the student training material package for workshops I lead.
For the Drupal site administrators who are intending to make the transition to Drupal 7 soon, this will be a great resource. Many of the new admin level features and methods are exposed and the screenshots are useful. The installation walkthrough would be helpful for those who haven't tried it themselves, though it was a little brief. Explanations of the new core modules were great.
The real value comes in the later chapters when Noble breaks down the API changes for developers. Chapter 7 describes some very specific API improvements within Drupal that will impact the work of many developers throughout the community - this chapter is a great guide to updating your own Drupal 6 modules. Theme changes are covered well in earlier chapters, too.
Altogether, I think the book is presented well to the administrator and developer level Drupal users. It would not be useful to new Drupal users as it skirts around some of the fundamentals of the software, but there are other books in Packt's catalog that would be good for that.Drupal 7 First Look OverviewThis hands-on guide takes a look at the main functional areas of Drupal that have significant new features. It explains these new features and how to use them, drawing attention to significant differences from how things used to behave, and giving the reader an idea of the kind of consequences these changes will bring to them. Drupal 7 First Look is written for site administrators, themers, and developers who have some experience with Drupal 6 (or even Drupal 5) and want to upgrade their sites, themes, or modules to Drupal 7 or just learn more about Drupal 7. No programming experience is required, but several code examples are covered for readers that want more in-depth information about building themes and modules.

Agile Web Application Development with Yii 1.1 and PHP5 ReviewSometimes I read a tech book there are a few annoying errors that detract from the overall experience, but this one, the errors are so many and so egregious that it makes it impossible to follow along unless you are already a very highly skilled developer and can 'guess' what was meant.
For example, the author uses the InnoDB engine for his code examples, but fails to declare this on several of his schemas. This causes big problems as mySQL ships with MyISAM as the default database. Normally, schema should explicitly set the engine, particularly if you're not going to use the default!! Perhaps InnoDB is the default on his database, but the reality is that most people will probably be learning this framework against mySQL. Hopefully you're experienced enough with databases to catch this and figure out why the code doesn't work. Once you get past this 'gotcha', then you have to deal with code errors in almost every other example. It completely undermines my confidence in this writer's ability to teach the framework and make for hours of frustration as you try to track down why things aren't working. The writer clearly is an expert in Yii, but he's not much of a writer or instructor.
Then there's the general spelling errors. It seems to get worse as the book goes on. I've got 10 bucks that says this book was turned in by the author and published without any editorial review or proofreading at all.
Perhaps it's just me, but the Chapter on User Access Controls seems to be missing an entire section that would make the example work. He builds some tests, then builds the code, but doesn't cover getting the initial state set for a user with 'admin' level access. Another word, you run the code, but there's no 'user' setup who can then access the admin level pages he just spent time testing and developing ??? Perhaps this was another example of where the author suggests that you try and figure x, y or z out on your own as an "exercise".
Here's an example of some inelegant prose; how many typos can you find in this short block (I cut-and-pasted it directly from the pdf version):
One other small change we made as to add a simple link from the project details page so we could access this form form the application. The following line was added to the project show.php view file's list of link options:
[]
This gives us access to the new form.After that, I quit the book. Perhaps I'll be able to learn it better online.
I've read quite a few tech books over the years and this is a close contender for "Worst Book Ever". Unfortunately, it's the only book specifically on Yii right now. Dreamsweaver CS4 for Dummies
Dreamweaver CS4: The Missing Manual
The Essential Guide to Dreamweaver CS4 with CSS, Ajax and PHP (this book)
I started with Dreamweaver CS4 for Dummies, which I found to be a pretty good book. I was able to read it cover to cover (though it's not necessary to do so to get started). In addition to a good basic overview, it had a couple of very helpful tips in a chapter called "10 Resources You Might Need."
As my design became more detailed, I felt the need for a book that went into more depth and bought the other two books listed above. I like both books, but find I rely on The Missing Manual the most. Its writing is clear and easy to follow. The numerous tutorials give step-by-step instructions for a beginner on how to accomplish various tasks, with more advanced details included in the text.
I like The Essential Guide as well, but since I'm not using PHP, I find that there are areas where the advice they give simply doesn't work for me. For example, when I wanted to learn more about using templates, The Essential Guide gave only a very basic explanation, then went into far more detail about using PHP "includes" instead. While I agree that the PHP "includes" are probably the better choice, it's not one that is available to me since I don't have a PHP testing server (and don't want to go through the complexity of setting one up on my home computer). If you are using PHP, then this is definitely the book to get.
All in all, if I had to recommend one book to get started, it would be For Dummies, particularly if your needs are very simple and/or you're completely new to web site design. For those who want to move beyond the basics, I like The Missing Manual the best. This book could also be used by beginners as long as you're not put off by its length -- with over 1,000 pages, it's not one you'll be able to read cover to cover. I think The Essential Guide is best suited for those who want to create very complex designs, especially those that use PHP. It, too, is very clearly written, but more intimidating to a beginner. If you're a computer professional or experienced web site designer who really wants to exploit the power of Dreamweaver, this is the book to get.The Essential Guide to Dreamweaver CS4 with CSS, Ajax, and PHP (Essentials) OverviewThe Essential Guide to Dreamweaver is a new and updated edition of David Powers' previous book (the number 2 bestselling Dreamweaver book on Amazon), and covers all of the new features in the same style that was so successful in the previous edition. Drupal 7 ReviewA lot of time has passed between when this book was written and today. That also means a lot has changed in the development of Drupal 7. Reading this book is like playing a guessing game of how the Drupal developers changed things between the Alpha version of Drupal 7 (against which this book was written) and the current release candidates and actual releases.
I can tell you that over 50% of the content in this book is either **wrong** or **irrelevant** unless you intend on using an old Alpha version of Drupal 7 in production (not a good idea). This book was clearly written in an opportunistic way to capitalize on the upcoming release of Drupal 7 without any regard to its relevance once Drupal 7 actually comes out. I for one think it's a shameful way to write books and even though I have never written a review on this site, I felt compelled to warn others. The author should apologize for wasting my time and the time of any other poor sap who spent hard-earned money on this waste of paper.Drupal 7 OverviewThe approach of this book has been revised and updated for Drupal 7 based on comments from thousands of readers. The book takes a pragmatic look at the steps necessary to get a website up and running. This book is for people with little or no experience in website design, people who are not necessarily familiar with PHP, MySQL or HTML, and above all people with little to no experience in using Drupal.

WordPress 2.8 Themes Cookbook ReviewThis book goes into details about manipulating templates and how to modify/manipulate the various components that can appear on pages but it does not cover very much about theme development. It is not a book for people who do not have a good grasp of PHP and terms used (such as "wordpress performs a query fetching pages based on parameters passed to the function").
For example, Chapter 2: Creating navigation talks about how to list all the pages, categories, tags in a blog and creating menus but there is nothing about styling these items once they are added to a page, or how to make those items appear on only certain pages within a site. I was hoping to find information about modifying or creating pages within a theme and discussion about how to adjust the layout of the site.
Cookbook is a good descriptor for the book. Everything is in the format: If you want this ... do this.
If I did not already have a good idea where to find files in the wordpress folders I would have been struggling to figure out where and how to manipulate the files the authors talk about. This book may end up being a reference that I refer to occasionally for some snippet of code, but it is not something I will refer to when building a new theme for a client.
WordPress 2.8 Themes Cookbook OverviewEach recipe comprises step-by-step instructions followed by the analysis of what was done in each task and other useful information. The book is designed so that you can read it chapter by chapter, or you can look at the list of recipes and refer to them in no particular order. There are plenty of useful screenshots to make learning easier for you. This book is for WordPress developers who want to create powerful themes for their blogs and web sites to impress and influence visitors. This book expects working knowledge of the WordPress platform. Knowledge of HTML and CSS would also be useful.

Drupal Multimedia ReviewHaving worked with Drupal for two years, I have reached the point where I need expert advice in order to continue to grow. Drupal is a bit like a forest with many paths running through it. You could spend all year trying each one and learning from experience, or you could get an experienced hand to point you in the right direction, especially if you cannot devote all your time to learning Drupal.
Aaron Winborn is experienced, knowledgeable, and helpful, if his writing at all reflects the man. The creator of the Embedded Media Field module, his has recognized expertise in configuring Drupal to handle multimedia content. In Drupal Multimedia, Winborn describes the state of Drupal multimedia support with one eye toward Drupal history and the other exploring the future. Context helps achieve deeper understanding.
For most of the book explains how to include images, video, and audio in Drupal sites. In these chapters, I found answers to questions I had been asking for a while. What felt right about the Image module (e.g., image galleries), and what needed fine-tuning to work better (e.g., WYSIWYG integration)? Winborn takes the reader from Image to Image Assist, Image Attach, and finally the TinyMCE DrupalImage button, the last of which had escaped me in my previous forays into online documentation and support forum discussions. I was only disappointed not to find an answer to another longstanding want: easy bulk image upload for end-users.
Winborn does not always take a single path through the forest. Often, he points out two or three different paths that might work well for your needs, while omitting mention of those that (I assume) he feels might not. After the comprehensive introduction to Image, Winborn changes approach. He describes how to use ImageField and ImageCache in conjunction with one's own custom content type. Comparing the two approaches not only helped me better understand how to structure my own approach but also provided an important insight into the Drupal ecosystem.
Winborn takes care not to blow his own horn too loudly. His creation, Embedded Media Field, plays third string behind other image solutions. The explanation is critical to integration with third-party media hosts such as Flickr and YouTube.
Winborn introduces the book as a "beginner to intermediate" Drupal resource while acknowleding the advanced nature of some examples. I thought this description was right on. A Drupal beginner would likely not be comfortable implementing some of the solutions provided, for example adding a preprocess hook to display the appropriate media player for an attached video. On the other hand, I found the emphasis on Node Reference essential for me to understand how to keep media items in their own nodes yet allow web pages to display them in the proper player.
Later in the book, Winborn takes a couple of thoughtful turns. He treats video before audio, upsetting the conventional order between them yet explicitly acknowledging the dominance of video these days. He also presents the embedded video field before addressing how to upload "local" video files. That also makes good sense to me, as I have quickly discovered how even a low-volume site benefits from hosting video at a specialized provider, such as Blip.tv.
Your perspective on the book may depend on your definition of "beginner" and "intermediate." I benefitted from both the high-level view and the relatively complex explanations. The book provided something to seek me teeth into and room for growth, which I imagine every Drupal developer needs. True beginners may quickly lose themselves in the details. Advanced users may not find the text sufficiently challenging.
Drupal Multimedia will remain an essential resource for me, due to its vertical treatment of key techniques. Yet, I also find myself wanting more almost immediately. Will DrupalImage reach production site quality for Drupal 6? How should I provide bulk image upload capability to end users? What will support and maintenance of these techniques look like a year from now? While I am glad to have added this book to my knowledge base, I have quickly followed up the read with more tinkering on a test site and surfing the discussion forums.

Beginning WordPress 3 (Expert's Voice in Web Development) ReviewThe title of this book is deceptive, enough so that I handed it to a friend who was making the move from [...] to self-hosted WordPress because I thought she might find it helpful. She didn't, and when I actually sat down to read it myself, I understood why.
This is not a book for beginners, if by "beginners" you mean the people for whom WordPress for Dummies was written. It's a book for web developers who haven't used WordPress before.
To be fair to the author, the back cover copy says exactly that, but the publisher describes it as "User level: Beginner." I'm not sure how Apress would describe books for people who don't have any technical knowledge. "User level: Hopeless N00b"?
But the book itself is fantastic. It may be the best book I've ever read about WordPress. I don't consider myself a developer, but I know enough not to get completely lost in the code examples. This is a great book for those who are experienced users of WordPress but not PHP wizards and who want to go deeper and understand more.
I had a number of revelatory moments while reading this book. You can turn off or limit post revisions with one line of code in your wp-config.php file? So why was I bothering to use a plugin for it? (I know, some people don't have access to their wp-config.php file...or shouldn't be allowed access to it. But other people need to reduce the number of plugins they have installed, and I'm one of them.) There are RSS feeds for pages? Wish I'd known that when someone was asking about it on LinkedIn a few weeks back. You can show custom taxonomies, custom post types, and tags in your menu management page by clicking on Screen Options? (I beat my head against this for ages because I'd forgotten I'd read it, and I even marked the page.) There's a way to import content from Joomla? Bring it on. (Please. I'm desperately hoping to convince a client to change platforms.)
Then there's the great discussion of things you can do with the Loop, like create a page that displays excerpts from all its child pages. Most magazine themes make you pick two or three featured categories, but you could actually feature all your categories if you wanted to. (That's assuming you have a reasonable number of categories, unless you want a really long home page.)
I admit I got a bit lost in the chapters on creating widgets and plugins--I don't think I'm anywhere near ready to start developing plugins, and I'm not sure I ever will be. But I understand a little better what's involved in the process and how to look at the code.
There's a solid chapter on performance and security that covers all the usual suspects except the define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '96M'); trick (another single line in wp-config.php that can make a big difference) and then a highly valuable chapter on custom post types and custom taxonomies. Stephanie Leary walks you through how to do this the hard way, which gave me a chance to see what the plugins that help with these two WordPress features actually do, and helped me follow the demonstrations at the September WordPress Meetup.
The final chapter is on WordPress Multi-site, with a brief mention of BuddyPress. While this is a fraction of the information found in BuddyPress for Dummies, it has the advantage of referring to WordPress 3.0 and not the old WordPress MU, so it was good to get an overview of what had stayed the same and what had changed.
The author refers to useful plugins throughout the book, and also has a plugin index (Appendix A) and a collection of "plugin recipes" (Appendix C). The recipes are combinations of plugins you can use to build things with WordPress, like a wiki (I thought there was already a wiki plugin for WP) or a document sharing site. Again, I had a couple of surprises. There are plugins to sort your posts alphabetically? And I spent time creating special category page templates to do that for a client. (The other surprise was that Stephanie Leary doesn't seem to have heard of Blubrry's PowerPress plugin for podcasting, or that PodPress had been revived.)
If you have no web background at all and you're completely new to WordPress, this isn't the book for you. But if you're somewhere in between the complete novice and the hard-core developer, you're going to find this book unbelievably useful. The fact that it's clearly written in a non-technical style, tidily laid out, and has abundant screenshots is just a bonus. And you can download all the code samples from the Apress website.Beginning WordPress 3 (Expert's Voice in Web Development) OverviewOther WordPress books on the market discuss WordPress only in the context of blogging: how to set up a blog, how to write a blog, how to optimize a business blog. A few books offer detailed technical instructions on a specific aspect of the software, such as plugin or theme development. Beginning WordPress is the first to discuss WordPress as a general content management system that can compete with other popular open source projects like Joomla or Drupal. This book also aims to be one of the first if not the first to cover the new WordPress 3.0. Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 with PHP: Training from the Source ReviewI just had my first pass at this book and must say Thank you to David Powers for a job well done! First of, he did not repeat verbatim his book on CS4 as some lazy authors would have, but instead teaches the new advantages of CS5 while giving you great lessons on zend frame work, cms and so on. The examples used are very practical and can be applied directly to your work unlike some books I have read where the examples are only of the authors imagination and you would be pressed to find a way to apply them. He puts to practice his experience with the forums he moderates and shares that experience with you. It would have taken me at least 2 years to get all the experience shared in this book. I can't believe I even offer solutions to questions in forums now, why? because I have read this book and the tips are great. Thanks for sharing your knowledge David. This book though is for intermediate users. Beginners should please buy his CS4 book first and then see this book as a continuation of that. Top it off with his CSS book and maybe his php solutions book if you want to be interested in php and then you can call yourself a web designer that knows his stuff. Intermediate users of Dreamweaver would find this book very valuable. I never knew the new features in CS5 until I used this book and boy was I glad I upgraded. Do you want to style wordpress CMS in dreamweaver, then get this book. Do you want to get interested in the Zend framework and jQuery framework, then this book is for you. Finally if you want great tips on how to use DW, then add this to his CS4 book. If this book was $200 it would still be a good buy, because just the server behaviors that you can create alone with the examples from the book is a great time saver.
If Mr Powers happen to read this review, my only request is that he should please come out with something in the line of questions and solutions in building web sites, so we can benefit from his experience with the questions and answers he always come across in the forums. Anyway, this would do for now.

CONS:
- This book should be in the series: "From Novice to having some understanding". It does not cover ACL at all, and the cover of the basic Auth component is incredibly basic and lacking. Most of the examples are very simple, so you won't be getting to be a "Professional" with this book. The tile is ok "Beginning CakePHP" but by no means expect this book to cover in depth topics of challenging issues.
- The book is one big project that keeps adding on things - which is good. But the author decided to go for a Blog... Please another application? Pretty please? There are about a million blog tutorials out there, he could have gone the extra mile by giving us an interesting (i.e realistic) project. There is already a good blog tutorial on the cakephp.org site. Yes, the author does take the blog further in this book (he better, it's 300 pages) but still.
- Not the author's fault - but be warned that the book is for RC1 - and believe me, you will struggle figuring out why the provided code is not working and why so many errors (if you are using RC2 or beyond).
- All the examples except 1 are straight out of the box CAKEPHP built in things - which is fine, but real projects usually require you to stretch things, change some models to be used differently.
- The "Advanced features" chapter is a joke. It spends less than 1 page in most of those advance features. Basically, you are on your own. And a whopping of 6 pages on the forms helper. (Web applications live on forms, a whole book could be written on the topic).
