Learning Joomla 1.5 Extension Development ReviewExcellent beginning book on writing Joomla extensions. He concentrates on devloping a component extension, but also has you create modules and plugins.
So that you know how to judge my reaction to this book, here's my background: I have good HTML/CSS skills, have installed a few Joomla site, and written a couple of templates. I've been a programmer for many years but on languages quite different from php. My php skills are still pretty new. I understood the concept of object oriented programming but hadn't much experience with it. I knew what MVC stood for, but that was about it.
It would have been nice to know more OOP, but I managed.
The MVC was very sensible and a much cleaner way to deal with php. That was fine to pick up.
After finishing the book, I was able to create my own component extension.
You are going to want to know some HTML, some php and joomla before you try this. If you don't know oop, I'd recommend taking a quick tutorial on it first. Killerphp.com has a quick practical one.
The only complaint I have is that I wish he had created an appendix or footnotes with the Joomla commands and their parameters. While he explains what's needed for the extension example, it's sometimes hard to know what all the parameters are used for which makes it difficult to go beyond something very similar to his example without finding another resource. You can check out the joomla dev site for details or look at the files themselves, but that's a little TOO detailed!Learning Joomla 1.5 Extension Development OverviewA rapid and easy-to-follow introductory tutorial to help you use PHP code to create your first Joomla! extensions: modules, components, and plugins. This book is suitable for PHP programmers who want to take their first step in customizing and extending the features of Joomla! through custom PHP development. It is not a reference guide for advanced Joomla! developers. You need only the basics of PHP programming; no experience of developing Joomla! extensions is assumed. You are expected to be familiar with the general operation of Joomla!

Drupal 6 Performance Tips ReviewThis book is supposed to provide: "crucial performance-related information for users of all experience levels."
That is false. The book is a ripoff of content from the main Drupal site drupal dot org. Nearly the entire book consists of, here is module X, go download it from drupal dot org and enable it, oh and let's pad the pages by giving you the enabling steps for each module we suggest.
The book devotes 50, count 'em 50 pages to how to update Drupal. This is ridiculous. All of that information is available in the Drupal handbook pages online or in the API docs or in more concise format in books such as 'Using Drupal' which will give you a lot more value.
You would be better off to join the high-performance group on drupal dot org (Google for high performance group drupal, it is the first result, since Amazon removes links) and read the drupal dot org handbook pages.
You can find the rest of my review at nowarninglabel dot com, which is my blog.Drupal 6 Performance Tips OverviewThis is a practical and solution-based book designed to help you to quickly discover and learn about specific aspects of Drupal performance that you are interested in. In each chapter, Drupal-based modular performance tips and solutions are investigated and explained in detail. This book is written for Drupal beginners, developers, designers, and webmasters who utilize the Drupal content management system to create robust websites. It provides crucial performance-related information for users of all experience levels, including Drupal module contributors, webmasters who simply configure and maintain Drupal websites, and even Drupal themers. This book expects basic knowledge of Drupal operation, configuration and server technologies, and applications including MySQL and PHP.

WordPress and Flash 10x Cookbook ReviewI am a designer and write some Actionscript but would not consider myself a programmer. Most of my work is in content publishing, and I was very pleased with the non-technical descriptions of very complex technical processes. The section on the new keyframing in Flash 10 cleared up the topic for me, and I have been able to apply some of the settings I read about. If you are a content publisher who uses WordPress and you really like the look of flash content, I would definitely reccomend this book.WordPress and Flash 10x Cookbook OverviewThis book consists of a series of easy-to-follow recipes. Each recipe stands on its own, so you can open the book to any recipe and complete it without going through the previous recipes. You can work through the book from start to end or just choose the recipes most applicable to your needs and situation. The book presents recipes of varying difficulty levels so that there is something for everyone from a beginner to an advanced WordPress user. Detailed screenshots, code examples, and links to additional resources supplement the concise instructions. If you are a Wordpress user interested in creating multimedia-rich websites and blogs using Flash then this book is perfect for you. This book caters for site administrators and web developers, who have experience using Flash aand Wordpress.

Flash with Drupal Reviewall i can say..what an excellent book. recommend this to all intermediate/advanced flash developers that want to have a more solid backend... rather than using static xml files. book is very well written.Flash with Drupal OverviewThis book takes a step-by-step approach to building Flash applications for use with the Drupal Content Management System. In each chapter, you walk through the evolution of a real Flash application designed for Drupal. Every chapter builds on the previous one by presenting a more challenging feature for each additional chapter. This book is written for developers who wish to build dynamic flash applications. Although we will be using Drupal for our Content Management System, the lessons learned within this book can easily be applied to other content management systems such as Joomla or WordPress. Because of this, you are not assumed to be familiar with Drupal. Any interaction with Drupal will be described in full detail so that anyone can follow along. As for Flash, it is not necessary to be familiar with how to use Flash since that too will be covered within this book. However, it is recommended that you have some modest understanding of ActionScript and PHP since there are many code examples within this book.

Pro Drupal Development ReviewIf you are looking for a "this is how up install and run Drupal, these are the modules that are available" look elsewhere (the Drupal site, for instance) - this book is about writing Drupal modules how Drupal works internally.
But, if you are an aspiring Drupal module writer or just want to better understand how Drupal works internally or want to be able to tinker with existing modules you CANNOT go wrong with this book. It is very detailed, is incredibly well laid out and written. The examples are spot on. Very easy to understand and teaches you an incredible amount. I'm reading it cover to cover. I am about half way through and I couldn't be happier. It has answered pretty much every question I had about developing Drupal modules and extending existing functionality. I found some of the tutorials on the Drupal web site lacking in detail, this book IS the detail I was looking for. It covers Drupal 5.0.Pro Drupal Development Overview
Drupal is one of the most popular content management systems in use today. With it, you can create a variety of community-driven sites, including blogs, forums, wiki-style sites, and much more. Pro Drupal Development was written to arm you with knowledge to customize your Drupal installation however you see fit. The book assumes that you already possess the knowledge to install and bring a standard installation online. Then authors John VanDyk and Matt Westgate delve into Drupal internals, showing you how to truly take advantage of its powerful architecture.

Youll learn how to create your own modules, develop your own themes, and produce your own filters. You'll learn the inner workings of each key part of Drupal, including user management, sessions, the node system, caching, and the various APIs available to you. Of course, your Drupal-powered site isnt effective until you can efficiently serve pages to your visitors. As such, the authors have included the information you need to optimize your Drupal installation to perform well under high-load situations. Also featured is information on Drupal security and best practices, as well as integration of Ajax and the internationalization of your Drupal web site. Simply put, if you are working with Drupal at all, then you need this book.

This book is written by Drupal core developers.
Drupal architecture and behavior are mapped out visually.
Common pitfalls are identified and addressed.
Chapters provide regular discussion and reference to why things work they way they do, not just how.
Features a foreword by Dries Buytaert, Drupal founder.

Drupal 7 First Look ReviewI've had the chance to read another Packt Publishing title called Drupal 7 First Look by Mark Noble. I thought I would put down a few thoughts.
I lead Drupal administration and development training on a fairly regular basis and I'm always a little sensitive to instructional books. It's not easy teaching through literature and it's especially difficult to connect the right learner to the right level of literature to be useful to learning. That has been my complaint with many of the Packt titles in the last two years. The top notch authors are very attractive to Drupal learners, but those authors present their concepts with an assumption that readers have the right background. With Noble's book, the intended audience is clearly defined and makes this book more effective that the other's I've read. I have considered including this book as part of the student training material package for workshops I lead.
For the Drupal site administrators who are intending to make the transition to Drupal 7 soon, this will be a great resource. Many of the new admin level features and methods are exposed and the screenshots are useful. The installation walkthrough would be helpful for those who haven't tried it themselves, though it was a little brief. Explanations of the new core modules were great.
The real value comes in the later chapters when Noble breaks down the API changes for developers. Chapter 7 describes some very specific API improvements within Drupal that will impact the work of many developers throughout the community - this chapter is a great guide to updating your own Drupal 6 modules. Theme changes are covered well in earlier chapters, too.
Altogether, I think the book is presented well to the administrator and developer level Drupal users. It would not be useful to new Drupal users as it skirts around some of the fundamentals of the software, but there are other books in Packt's catalog that would be good for that.Drupal 7 First Look OverviewThis hands-on guide takes a look at the main functional areas of Drupal that have significant new features. It explains these new features and how to use them, drawing attention to significant differences from how things used to behave, and giving the reader an idea of the kind of consequences these changes will bring to them. Drupal 7 First Look is written for site administrators, themers, and developers who have some experience with Drupal 6 (or even Drupal 5) and want to upgrade their sites, themes, or modules to Drupal 7 or just learn more about Drupal 7. No programming experience is required, but several code examples are covered for readers that want more in-depth information about building themes and modules.

Moodle JavaScript Cookbook ReviewOne of the mayor 'complaints' about open source lms systems such as Moodle is the fact that the 'looks' can be a bit dissapointing. Now with the surge of HTML 5 (javascript) for those who can, it is possible to make moodle look great or make it even more interactive.
In the moodle community there is a lot to find about not-so-technical stuff, but for those who want to get deeper into it, you may be on your own a bit. This book will help those technical guys and girls. You may need to know some php, html but you do not need to know any javascript for this book.Moodle JavaScript Cookbook OverviewThis is a cookbook that contains a list of recipes explaining step-by-step how to use JavaScript in Moodle. The first two chapters concentrate on the basics of how to start working with JavaScript and the YUI while the later chapters show how to use these techniques as a basis for implementing more complete functionality. This book is aimed at developers and administrators comfortable with customizing Moodle with the use of plugin modules, themes, and patches who want to make their site more dynamic. If you have prior knowledge of HTML, PHP, and CSS and a good working knowledge of the underlying structure of Moodle, then this book is for you. No prior experience with JavaScript is needed.

Build Your Own Wicked Wordpress Themes ReviewI received the book Friday afternoon (8/20/2010) and finished reading it Sunday (8/22/2010), and my head is still spinning ... but in a good way. I am about three weeks new to WordPress, and I have to say that it's overwhelming trying to learn about everything that makes it what it is. I had been reading through the codex ([...]), which is a tremendous resource by the WordPress folks, but it has been difficult for me to tie it all together. This book is a great primer to theme building with WordPress and will help you to understand the main components that make up the WordPress software, and it does so in a pleasant and organized way. I dabble in web design, but my profession is that of web development and programming, and I'm pleased to say that this book, while aimed at web designers, will encourage the curiosity of developers alike.
I had some reservations about the book having four authors, as the flow of a tech book doesn't always work when there are too many "experts" coming to the table. I'm pleased to say that the book flows quite well, and the language and format with which the authors use to explain theme building is mostly consistent and cohesive. The only problem I had was in chapter 7: Theme Options, as it felt like the author of this chapter was jumping around a bit and not quite as organized and detailed with some of the explanations, and perhaps rushing a bit. Otherwise, I now feel much more confident in WordPress and theme building from not only a 10,000 foot view, but a 1,000 foot view as well. As with anything tech, you have to "pop the hood", and get your hands dirty, and I now feel like I can thanks to this book.
The book is broken into 8 chapters ... interestingly, each chapter fundamentally builds upon the last, but you could easily make a quick pass through the book to get familiarized with WordPress and themes, and then use it as a high-level reference thereafter (and using the codex will probably make much more sense after moving through this book). The chapters are:
1. Introducing WordPress
2. Planning Your Theme
3. Theme Design 101
4. Theme Frameworks
5. Advanced Theme Construction
6. Widgets
7. Theme Options
8. Selling Your Theme
I bought this book with two ideas in mind: learn about the "guts" of WordPress from a high level, and understand what goes into a WordPress theme to eventually make and sell them, and the book moves you forward in the right direction. This book, IMO, does a very good job of covering a great deal of ground in a short amount of time. I have only started to work on converting my business website to WordPress, but this book, and the information in it, has given me the confidence to play and experiment, and really go after the inner workings of the Thematic framework.
Thanks to SitePoint for a great book on the topic!Build Your Own Wicked Wordpress Themes Overview
Wicked WordPress Themes is a step-by-step guide to creating beautiful themes for the world's most popular CMS, WordPress. By following the book's advice, readers can produce designs that are aesthetically stunning, consistent, and for-purpose -whether it's for their own use, or to drive a high price on the theme marketplace. All facets of theme design are covered: from design, coding, and deployment, to ensuring readers' designs are ready-to-go as soon as they're installed. Wicked WordPress Themes teaches readers how to leverage theme design frameworks to dramatically shorten development time, enabling them to enter the theme market faster.

ASP.NET MVC 1.0 Website Programming: Problem - Design - Solution (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThis book builds on existing material from Marco Bellinaso's book, ASP.Net 2.0 Website Programming, migrating the implementation of the BeerHouse eCommerce web application to using more recently released Microsoft technologies such as ASP.Net MVC 1.0, LINQ to SQL, and SQL Server 2008, and updating the text to explain concepts behind the new implementation. As the authors indicated in their introduction to ASP.Net MVC, one thing developers will gain with using this newer technology instead of classic ASP.Net 2.0 is finer control over the web application's client-side code. The flip side to this is that .Net developers, who so far have been relatively shielded from having to know too much about html, css, or javascript because of conveniences offered by classic ASP.Net 2.0, may now have to know more about these technologies in order to develop the presentation logic for their web apps. It's not surprising, therefore, to see a lot more javascript code in the revamped BeerHouse web app. So if you're trying to get a feel for what a non-trivial ASP.Net MVC application might look like and you don't mind reading through the javascript code, the BeerHouse web app presented in this book might be useful to you.
In my opinion, however, despite its title, this book doesn't delve deeply into ASP.Net MVC per se. Compared to Steven Sanderson's book, Pro ASP.Net MVC Framework, this book only provides a superficial introduction to the new framework, and only demos a limited subset of features. With a little more effort and for pedagogic reasons, the authors could have worked into the BeerHouse application showcase examples of how to implement, say: server-side data validation (e.g., use of IDataErrorInfo), or security features such as more advanced model binding that prevents the editing of certain properties, and Cross-Site Request Forgery prevention through the use of the Html.AntiForgeryToken() helper, etc. For a more thorough but still accessible tutorial on ASP.Net MVC, you should get Sanderson's well-written book if you haven't.ASP.NET MVC 1.0 Website Programming: Problem - Design - Solution (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewPerfectly suited to the innovative Problem ? Design ? Solution approach, ASP.NET MVC is a new development model that separates code for the data, look, and business processes of a Web site. This nuts-and-bolts guide thoroughly covers creating a Web site with MVC and discusses solving the most common problems that you may encounter when creating your first application or trying to upgrade a current application. The material is based on the highly praised and widely used ?TheBeerHouse? ASP.NET Starter Kit that was developed in the bestselling ASP.NET 2.0 Website Programming: Problem?Design?Solution. Additional coverage includes registration and membership systems and user-selectable themes; content management systems for articles and photos; polls, mailing lists, and forums; e-commerce stores, shopping carts, and order management with real-time credit card processing, and more.

Ektron Developer's Guide: Building an Ektron Powered Website (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThis is a good book that is applicable to developers, of course... it's the "Developers Guide"... but it's also good for trainers, power users, marketing/communications employees... all across the organization. It talks about the WHY as well as the WHAT and HOW; so, there are sections like "the importance of social networking" and "connecting to clients." Buy a few, because once people figure that out, they'll have trouble sharing.
Cons? You'll end up tagging a lot of pages because the index is a bit short, and the code samples are only in C# (so, VB folks will have to figure out how some of them map to C# themselves). Maybe someone should re-write all the samples in VB and post them somewhere? (hint, hint)
Overall, it's a good start to finish cms book that takes you seamlessly from overview to specifics with something for everyone in-between. Thanks for writing this guys!Ektron Developer's Guide: Building an Ektron Powered Website (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewThe first book to cover the Ektron content management system (CMS)

Drupal 7 ReviewA lot of time has passed between when this book was written and today. That also means a lot has changed in the development of Drupal 7. Reading this book is like playing a guessing game of how the Drupal developers changed things between the Alpha version of Drupal 7 (against which this book was written) and the current release candidates and actual releases.
I can tell you that over 50% of the content in this book is either **wrong** or **irrelevant** unless you intend on using an old Alpha version of Drupal 7 in production (not a good idea). This book was clearly written in an opportunistic way to capitalize on the upcoming release of Drupal 7 without any regard to its relevance once Drupal 7 actually comes out. I for one think it's a shameful way to write books and even though I have never written a review on this site, I felt compelled to warn others. The author should apologize for wasting my time and the time of any other poor sap who spent hard-earned money on this waste of paper.Drupal 7 OverviewThe approach of this book has been revised and updated for Drupal 7 based on comments from thousands of readers. The book takes a pragmatic look at the steps necessary to get a website up and running. Drawing on years of writing experience, David Mercer utilizes a friendly, engaging style that is both clear and concise-perfect for the Drupal newbie. This book is for people with little or no experience in website design, people who are not necessarily familiar with PHP, MySQL or HTML, and above all people with little to no experience in using Drupal.

WordPress 2.8 Themes Cookbook ReviewThis book goes into details about manipulating templates and how to modify/manipulate the various components that can appear on pages but it does not cover very much about theme development. It is not a book for people who do not have a good grasp of PHP and terms used (such as "wordpress performs a query fetching pages based on parameters passed to the function").
For example, Chapter 2: Creating navigation talks about how to list all the pages, categories, tags in a blog and creating menus but there is nothing about styling these items once they are added to a page, or how to make those items appear on only certain pages within a site. I was hoping to find information about modifying or creating pages within a theme and discussion about how to adjust the layout of the site.
Cookbook is a good descriptor for the book. Everything is in the format: If you want this ... do this.
If I did not already have a good idea where to find files in the wordpress folders I would have been struggling to figure out where and how to manipulate the files the authors talk about. This book may end up being a reference that I refer to occasionally for some snippet of code, but it is not something I will refer to when building a new theme for a client.
WordPress 2.8 Themes Cookbook OverviewEach recipe comprises step-by-step instructions followed by the analysis of what was done in each task and other useful information. The book is designed so that you can read it chapter by chapter, or you can look at the list of recipes and refer to them in no particular order. There are plenty of useful screenshots to make learning easier for you. This book is for WordPress developers who want to create powerful themes for their blogs and web sites to impress and influence visitors. This book expects working knowledge of the WordPress platform. Knowledge of HTML and CSS would also be useful.

Drupal Multimedia ReviewHaving worked with Drupal for two years, I have reached the point where I need expert advice in order to continue to grow. Drupal is a bit like a forest with many paths running through it. You could spend all year trying each one and learning from experience, or you could get an experienced hand to point you in the right direction, especially if you cannot devote all your time to learning Drupal.
Aaron Winborn is experienced, knowledgeable, and helpful, if his writing at all reflects the man. The creator of the Embedded Media Field module, his has recognized expertise in configuring Drupal to handle multimedia content. In Drupal Multimedia, Winborn describes the state of Drupal multimedia support with one eye toward Drupal history and the other exploring the future. Context helps achieve deeper understanding.
For most of the book explains how to include images, video, and audio in Drupal sites. In these chapters, I found answers to questions I had been asking for a while. What felt right about the Image module (e.g., image galleries), and what needed fine-tuning to work better (e.g., WYSIWYG integration)? Winborn takes the reader from Image to Image Assist, Image Attach, and finally the TinyMCE DrupalImage button, the last of which had escaped me in my previous forays into online documentation and support forum discussions. I was only disappointed not to find an answer to another longstanding want: easy bulk image upload for end-users.
Winborn does not always take a single path through the forest. Often, he points out two or three different paths that might work well for your needs, while omitting mention of those that (I assume) he feels might not. After the comprehensive introduction to Image, Winborn changes approach. He describes how to use ImageField and ImageCache in conjunction with one's own custom content type. Comparing the two approaches not only helped me better understand how to structure my own approach but also provided an important insight into the Drupal ecosystem.
Winborn takes care not to blow his own horn too loudly. His creation, Embedded Media Field, plays third string behind other image solutions. The explanation is critical to integration with third-party media hosts such as Flickr and YouTube.
Winborn introduces the book as a "beginner to intermediate" Drupal resource while acknowleding the advanced nature of some examples. I thought this description was right on. A Drupal beginner would likely not be comfortable implementing some of the solutions provided, for example adding a preprocess hook to display the appropriate media player for an attached video. On the other hand, I found the emphasis on Node Reference essential for me to understand how to keep media items in their own nodes yet allow web pages to display them in the proper player.
Later in the book, Winborn takes a couple of thoughtful turns. He treats video before audio, upsetting the conventional order between them yet explicitly acknowledging the dominance of video these days. He also presents the embedded video field before addressing how to upload "local" video files. That also makes good sense to me, as I have quickly discovered how even a low-volume site benefits from hosting video at a specialized provider, such as Blip.tv.
Your perspective on the book may depend on your definition of "beginner" and "intermediate." I benefitted from both the high-level view and the relatively complex explanations. The book provided something to seek me teeth into and room for growth, which I imagine every Drupal developer needs. True beginners may quickly lose themselves in the details. Advanced users may not find the text sufficiently challenging.
Drupal Multimedia will remain an essential resource for me, due to its vertical treatment of key techniques. Yet, I also find myself wanting more almost immediately. Will DrupalImage reach production site quality for Drupal 6? How should I provide bulk image upload capability to end users? What will support and maintenance of these techniques look like a year from now? While I am glad to have added this book to my knowledge base, I have quickly followed up the read with more tinkering on a test site and surfing the discussion forums.

Beginning WordPress 3 (Expert's Voice in Web Development) ReviewThe title of this book is deceptive, enough so that I handed it to a friend who was making the move from [...] to self-hosted WordPress because I thought she might find it helpful. She didn't, and when I actually sat down to read it myself, I understood why.
This is not a book for beginners, if by "beginners" you mean the people for whom WordPress for Dummies was written. It's a book for web developers who haven't used WordPress before.
To be fair to the author, the back cover copy says exactly that, but the publisher describes it as "User level: Beginner." I'm not sure how Apress would describe books for people who don't have any technical knowledge. "User level: Hopeless N00b"?
But the book itself is fantastic. It may be the best book I've ever read about WordPress. I don't consider myself a developer, but I know enough not to get completely lost in the code examples. This is a great book for those who are experienced users of WordPress but not PHP wizards and who want to go deeper and understand more.
I had a number of revelatory moments while reading this book. You can turn off or limit post revisions with one line of code in your wp-config.php file? So why was I bothering to use a plugin for it? (I know, some people don't have access to their wp-config.php file...or shouldn't be allowed access to it. But other people need to reduce the number of plugins they have installed, and I'm one of them.) There are RSS feeds for pages? Wish I'd known that when someone was asking about it on LinkedIn a few weeks back. You can show custom taxonomies, custom post types, and tags in your menu management page by clicking on Screen Options? (I beat my head against this for ages because I'd forgotten I'd read it, and I even marked the page.) There's a way to import content from Joomla? Bring it on. (Please. I'm desperately hoping to convince a client to change platforms.)
Then there's the great discussion of things you can do with the Loop, like create a page that displays excerpts from all its child pages. Most magazine themes make you pick two or three featured categories, but you could actually feature all your categories if you wanted to. (That's assuming you have a reasonable number of categories, unless you want a really long home page.)
I admit I got a bit lost in the chapters on creating widgets and plugins--I don't think I'm anywhere near ready to start developing plugins, and I'm not sure I ever will be. But I understand a little better what's involved in the process and how to look at the code.
There's a solid chapter on performance and security that covers all the usual suspects except the define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '96M'); trick (another single line in wp-config.php that can make a big difference) and then a highly valuable chapter on custom post types and custom taxonomies. Stephanie Leary walks you through how to do this the hard way, which gave me a chance to see what the plugins that help with these two WordPress features actually do, and helped me follow the demonstrations at the September WordPress Meetup.
The final chapter is on WordPress Multi-site, with a brief mention of BuddyPress. While this is a fraction of the information found in BuddyPress for Dummies, it has the advantage of referring to WordPress 3.0 and not the old WordPress MU, so it was good to get an overview of what had stayed the same and what had changed.
The author refers to useful plugins throughout the book, and also has a plugin index (Appendix A) and a collection of "plugin recipes" (Appendix C). The recipes are combinations of plugins you can use to build things with WordPress, like a wiki (I thought there was already a wiki plugin for WP) or a document sharing site. Again, I had a couple of surprises. There are plugins to sort your posts alphabetically? And I spent time creating special category page templates to do that for a client. (The other surprise was that Stephanie Leary doesn't seem to have heard of Blubrry's PowerPress plugin for podcasting, or that PodPress had been revived.)
If you have no web background at all and you're completely new to WordPress, this isn't the book for you. But if you're somewhere in between the complete novice and the hard-core developer, you're going to find this book unbelievably useful. The fact that it's clearly written in a non-technical style, tidily laid out, and has abundant screenshots is just a bonus. And you can download all the code samples from the Apress website.Beginning WordPress 3 (Expert's Voice in Web Development) OverviewOther WordPress books on the market discuss WordPress only in the context of blogging: how to set up a blog, how to write a blog, how to optimize a business blog. A few books offer detailed technical instructions on a specific aspect of the software, such as plugin or theme development. Beginning WordPress is the first to discuss WordPress as a general content management system that can compete with other popular open source projects like Joomla or Drupal. This book also aims to be one of the first if not the first to cover the new WordPress 3.0. Lastly, WordPress remains one if not the top blogging and content management platform, besides Joomla and Drupal. See http://wordpress.org/download/counter/ for just version 2.8.x. As of September 2009, Wordpress is used by 62.8 million websites in the US and 202 million websites worldwide

Liferay Portal 5.2 Systems Development ReviewThe book is not exactly what I've expected. I hoped more for a book where you in the begining install basic Liferay portal and in each chapter add more functionality into it, e.g. in second chapter author would create portlet, third chapter modify ext, etc.. But one specific task per chapter - which would be done from begining to the end, with complete source code (bolded important/interesting parts).
I had little bit problems to orientate within that, as it was written as was. Also I found quite strange when there were parts like "create directory, create file, ..." and in the end of chapter was told "or you can simply run create.sh script and modify created files".
I liked the "Whats happening?" sections of the book, those were quite interesting. Anyway still one of best books for Liferay developers published so far :)Liferay Portal 5.2 Systems Development OverviewThis book focuses on teaching by example. Every chapter provides an overview, and then dives right into hands-on examples so you can see and play with the solution in your own environment. All code samples run on both the latest Enterprise and Community releases. This book will be most useful to professional Java developers who want to build custom web sites, portals, and highly customized intranet applications using Liferay portal as a framework. This book is for Java developers, and you will get most from the book if you already work with Java but you need not have prior experience on Liferay portal. Although Liferay portal makes heavy use of open source frameworks such as Spring, Hibernate, Struts, and Lucene, no prior experience using these is assumed.

Learning Drupal 6 Module Development: A practical tutorial for creating your first Drupal 6 modules with PHP ReviewIt seems every version of Drupal likes to change the API considerably. Signatures change, and many functions are dropped. Backwards compatibility is really NOT a concern with Drupal. This book covers the current version, 6, of Drupal.
It walks you through all of the code ideas of Drupal module and theme development. And really does a great job of doing this. Even if you are familiar with 5, the book examples are such that you can skim and upgrade your knowledge to 6.x.
One nice addition would have been a bit of reference. Maybe list all of the hook functions. List all of the form component types, with every attribute. I often found myself going online for examples of how to do form components that were not covered by this book.Learning Drupal 6 Module Development: A practical tutorial for creating your first Drupal 6 modules with PHP OverviewWalk through the development of complete Drupal 6 modules with this primer for PHP programmers, written specifically for Drupal 6 to get you started coding your first module. Are you a Drupal developer looking to update to version 6? This book covers the new and updated APIs to guide your transition to Drupal 6. The new menu system, the Forms and Schema APIs, and many core revisions are covered in this book. This book is written for PHP developers who want to add custom features to Drupal. You will need to know the basics of PHP and MySQL programming, but no experience of programming Drupal is required, although you will be expected to be familiar with the basic operation of Drupal.

Building Powerful and Robust Websites with Drupal 6: Build your own professional blog, forum, portal or community website with Drupal 6 ReviewThis updated and expanded edition of Drupal: Creating Blogs, Forums, Portals, and Community Websites contains 362 pages with the index -- ~100 more pages than there was in the first book. It's printed in black and white with screen captures that look like photocopies of photocopies, yet are still legible. The author, David Mercer, expressed on the Drupal website that he wishes his book to become the Drupal community's de facto title for learning the technology. Drupal has a steep learning curve... The book, in my opinion, will save newbies countless hours of aggravation. It contains information that I found useful, although the book is not targeted for developers, nor themers Packt has another book Drupal 5 Themes that decently covers theming, but for Drupal 5. Mercer spends much time here discussing web technologies used with and around Drupal. For example, you'll learn how to install a server on your machine (Apache2Triad), and will get an introduction to HTML! You will not here learn how to install multiple sites that use the same code base, you won't know the steps by which you create a virtual host on your development machine, nor will you learn to properly reference image files in your site content. Most information pertaining to 'scaling' and performance relayed by Mercer can be read right from the Drupal interface. I'd like to mention right off that the book's instructions on how to install a language translation are incorrect. I should also mention that there is an excellent coverage of several contributed modules. You'll find in this book the best introduction I've seen to CCK.
Per chapter detailed review
CHAPTER 1 covers how Drupal came to be and what it has to offer. You get a tour of the Drupal web site. (Mercer mentions the sheer number of support-related posts in the Drupal forums: 200,000). Forums have an advantage over Drupal's IRC channels: forums are archived, and hence searchable.
In CHAPTER 2, we install Apache2Triad on our development machine. Once we've set up our local server, we download and install Drupal 6 using a fresh database. (We are directed to an appendix to learn how to upgrade a Drupal 5 web site to Drupal 6.) Cron jobs are not discussed at this point, the author points us to chapter 10, 'Managing your web site', where they receive a fair treatment. The following is often overlooked: we (as 'admin') can view the Administer section 'By module', rather than 'By task', which is the default. Mercer makes good use of this particular view. In this chapter, we also get to install and configure a contributed module, DHTML Menu. (A module you won't be able to live without.)
In CHAPTER 3, we build a wildlife and conservation web site. We install forums and create content for them, we post a comment, and we learn how to use blocks. We take a close look at the search module configuration page. We learn that we can weigh the importance of three indexing criteria, which affect the order of search results. I learned how to re-index a web site, and then run cron.php manually so that the re-indexing is done right away. This can be very useful. Say you want to place Ad-Sense ads on your site. You need to remove some words from your content, before you seek approval from the censors at Google. You edit your content, but some words still turn up in your web site search results. You are in a hurry, so you want to re-index your content right away. You go to admin/settings/search and press on the button 'Re-index site'. Then you go to admin/reports/status/run-cron.
In this chapter, we also create a custom block.
CHAPTER 4 covers things we modify or set usually only once, such as clean URLs and the download method. We learn that aliasing is a good idea, and are invited to skip ahead and learn how to use the modules Path and Pathauto, covered in chapter 10. We learn how to be both user and search engine friendly.
I was reminded that custom messages can be presented to the user whenever the content he's trying to see is restricted ('access denied') or 'not found'.
Unfortunately, Mercer does not explain how private download can interfere with the proper working of other parts of the site. What parts? For private download, the author sets his file path to the following absolute path: c:\apache2triad\files (p.104), instead of using, more appropriately, the relative path ../files.
CHAPTER 5 covers 'who does what' on the web site, ie: permissions, roles, and access rules. We're reminded in this chapter that any user who has an admin-defined role (such as role moderator) is also an authenticated user. Also, a user who belongs to role x and role y will get combined permissions of roles x and y. That means that if role x is allowed to Do Something, and role y isn't, the user will be able to Do Something. That is why one should create special roles by adding the specific additional permissions that are required by that role, and no more. (p.126). Very wise.
In CHAPTER 6, we learn how to generate simple content and administer it. There is a very nice coverage of the core modules Aggregator and Book.
You can download CHAPTER 7, 'Advanced Content', from the publisher's web site. This chapter covers taxonomy and custom content type creation. We learn that a taxonomy is a hierarchy of 'terms', unlike thesauri, which define 'is similar to' relationships. The contributed module Similar By Terms is mentioned. We learn that multiple vocabularies can be used to provide faceted tagging, although the example used by Mercer to illustrate this concept is weak. It's only further down the road in one of the last chapters (and not by accident, I believe) that we learn that it's possible to access lists of content through their tagged terms using system paths such as /taxonomy/term/1+4.
Coverage of CCK is excellent. We download the contrib module Fivestar to learn how to add a 'contributed field' to a content type, but it's not clear why we would want to do this when we can enable the Fivestar widget for any content type (another contrived how-to example). The chapter also covers input formats and filters, how the former can be created, and how the latter can be rearranged (the order in which they are applied). When creating a 'feature-rich' page, we attach an image file to our node, and display the image in the content using an tag with the 'src' attribute set to: http://localhost/mf4good/sites/default/files/team.jpg. This link will be broken when the file structure will change, such as after deployment. A site root-relative path is preferred: /sites/default/files/team.jpg or, in the case where the content may be posted on another web site through a feed, the URL of the file is even better: http://mf4good.com/sites/default/files/team.jpg.
CHAPTER 8 discusses theming. As an exercise, we download, install and customize the Barlow theme. The modifications we bring to it are simple: we upload a new logo, style blocks by modifying block.tpl.php and adding a few rules to style.css, change the background image.
In CHAPTER 9, we learn about Actions and Triggers, new-to-Drupal 6 modules. We also learn how to install a language translation the wrong way ;-) We learn to add a new language and then import to it a .po file that we download from drupal.org. When in fact, no manual 'import' is necessary. What needs to be done is 1) Get the translation tar ball (*.tar.gz file) from http://drupal.org/project/Translations, then move this file to your web root (in the same folder as index.php), then extract the file. Every extracted .po files (as there are many, many) end up where they're supposed to be. (The translation package has a tree structure.) Then, add the language (going to admin/settings/language/add). The importing of all .po files is then done automatically for you by Drupal.
If we want to translate the interface ourselves, Mercer recommends the use of a contributed module, Localization client, and shows us how to use it. This chapter provides an excellent coverage of content translation, as well. (Interface translation is one thing, content translation is another.) In a section about Drupal caching, Mercer talks about the contributed module CacheExclude which enables one to disable cache for certain pages. Then he offers a very brief jQuery introduction, presenting us with a contrived example script. (We are far away from the succinct yet powerful treatment jQuery gets in the book Pro Drupal Development.)
In CHAPTER 10, we learn how to use the modules Path and Pathauto for path aliasing. We learn how to run crontab, and how to make a backup of our web site. Mercer provides a checklist to help with Search Engine Optimization.
The author adopts a conversational tone (as I do here), is very thorough in his coverage of the Drupal interface, and provides a handful of screen captures in most places.
The book needs more polishing in a few places. The chapter on 'Advanced Content' (the one free to download) seems to have skipped proofreading, as it contains several glaring typos.
The book puts too much emphasis on general recommendations (such as Try not to chop and change too often once the site is live), and spends too much time discussing web technologies despite the author's objective to have provided more concentrated information. For example, Mercer talks in length about the different image formats used on the web, and introduces the reader to CSS and HTML. He spends too little time discussing the...Read more›Building Powerful and Robust Websites with Drupal 6: Build your own professional blog, forum, portal or community website with Drupal 6 OverviewThis book updates the bestselling Drupal: Creating Blogs, Forums, Portals, and Community Websites released for Drupal 4.7. Professional Plone 4 Development ReviewMartin Aspeli's Professional Plone 4 Development is the most-anticipated Plone book since Martin's earlier Professional Plone 3 Development. For Plone developers, it pretty much goes without saying that Martin is an outstanding technical writer, and that his documentation of Plone's development environment is definitive.
What got my attention about PP4D was that the contrast between it and PP3D is very much like the contrast between Plone 4 and Plone 3.
Plone 4 does more than Plone 3, and Martin's book is bigger and has new chapters and sections to cover the new features. But Plone 4 is also sleeker and faster than 3. Its parts fit together better, and it's more approachable to new users and integrators.
Martin shows us that the same is true for Plone 4 development. Both the Plone 4 development environment and the PP4D book make more sense than their Plone 3 counterparts. The parts fit together better. Plone 3 development required that you know, and practice, both new (Zope 3 style) and old (Archetypes) development paradigms. You had to know how to use Python packages and Zope products, skins and browser views. And, I think the Plone development community (and Martin) were not really sure how these fit together and when it was best to use which.
PP4D is much more confident. Dexterity (content-type development framework) and Diazo (theming system) are much better ways to develop, and Martin is able to explain them clearly without having to burden the reader with some many layers of history. PP4D, like its predecessor, is still a book for experienced, versatile programmers, but it doesn't need to make as many apologies to its audience.
Professional Plone 4 Development is thus a better book than its predecessor in part because Plone 4.x is a better development platform. Martin's community leadership is -- of course -- a large part of the reason for this advance. But, the improvements are also due to the great work of the many folks on the core development and framework teams.
So, Martin should take a big bow. But Hanno Schlichting, David Glick, Laurence Rowe, Eric Steele, Denys Mishunov, Rob Gietma, Alex Limi and many others should be proudly joining that curtain call. Bravo.
Professional Plone 4 Development OverviewProfessional Plone 4 Development is written in a clear conversational easy-to-understand style. This book cuts short the preamble and gets straight to the point - building robust, content-rich web applications with Plone 4. Detailed real world examples are provided for each chapter. This book assumes that the reader is familiar with Plone from the point of view of an administrator or power user, has a basic understanding of web application development, and is comfortable with the Python programming language.

Professional DotNetNuke Module Programming (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewI'd say the other reviewers are harsh bordering on unfair. I found the book very useful in picking up the fundamentals of DNN module development. It provided a good number of topics on which to search for more information; topics I would not have known existed (with any ease) without first reading this book.
I am no newbie to .NET development (10 years in the trade) but like many others out there, new to DNN. I needed something more than the documentation provided by DNN, which is patchy at best and useless at worst, and this book provided it.
I believe DNN is growing as an application and the literature support it will no doubt improve. Criticisms I would make of this book are as follows. At around 300 pages, there is scope to add more detail ... come on Mitchell, it's clear you know more, put it down on paper. Second, there a few careless errata (my favorite are VB files given a .cs extension) but on the other hand, this is by no means uncommon in Wrox books; I've read a few, I know.
So if you're interested in knowing more than the sdk documentation can tell you (and not just interested in showing off what you know already, other reviewers!) then this is pretty much your only option in book form. Buy it, search the forums and blogs, and you will be doing ok.
Professional DotNetNuke Module Programming (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewThis book was written to provide insight into the development techniques needed (and the options available) to work within the DotNetNuke framework. Emphasis is placed on the available methods to extend the framework, as well as the situations and rules governing when each respective extension model should be used. Along with this emphasis on selecting the right extension method, the book stresses the importance of leveraging the framework in as many areas as possible, and ultimately using the framework to the advantage of the developer, rather than merely working with it.
One current weakness of the DotNetNuke framework is developer documentation. The framework provides developers with numerous amazing methods to extend the framework and build truly robust applications, but as of this writing, minimal API documentation exists, and overall development topics are scattered all over the Internet. Many community members have helped to supplement this lack of developer content by writing blog articles and technical tutorials to help teach the individual concepts, but because there is no central repository, it can be tedious and difficult to find just what you need.
This book helps truly identify and document some excellent new features that are supported starting with DotNetNuke 5.0. The inclusion of jQuery exposes developers to a great JavaScript library that will enable interactive and animated interfaces to be created easily. The new Module Packaging system (discussed in detail in Appendix D) provides module developers and skin designers with many much-needed options when it comes to deploying applications. This book was written to expose this information, and to function as a key resource for the development community.
This book assumes that the reader has a working knowledge of standard ASP.NET development techniques and terminologies. Samples in the book are provided in both C# and Visual Basic (VB) to enable readers with diverse backgrounds to fully understand the concepts presented. Users do not need to have a comprehensive understanding of DotNetNuke prior to using this book because the early chapters discuss the configuration of both DotNetNuke and the development environment, and careful consideration has been taken to ensure that DotNetNuke-specific terminology is explained as the book progresses.
Readers already familiar with DotNetNuke 4.x development will find this book valuable because it introduces many of the new features of the latest software version, although some of the beginning chapters for these readers will be redundant because the overall concepts of environment configuration and basic interface elements have not changed from 4.x to 5.x. Differences between versions 4.x and 5.x are pointed out as appropriate.
As the title implies, this book primarily covers development techniques within the DotNetNuke 5.x platform. The chapters point out similarities and differences between the 4.x and 5.x platforms, enabling readers to apply some newer concepts to the older technology. Although this book primarily focuses on the concept of module development, it discusses other extension models as well, such as skin objects and authentication providers. Also covered in this book are recommended practices for successful integration with the framework.
This book begins with an introduction to development within DotNetNuke. The discussions walk you through DotNetNuke setup, terminology, development environment setup, and options for .NET project setup.
The book then presents a scenario-based model to introduce basic concepts of module development. This is accomplished by building a simple guestbook module that demonstrates how individual portions interact with one another. The discussion lays the foundation for the most basic elements of development within DotNetNuke. Later in the book, you learn about the more advanced module programming concepts, such as optional interfaces and DotNetNuke user controls. This discussion additionally introduces other extension methods, such as authentication providers and skin objects, as well as best practices.
In short, the main content of the book creates a working model that guides you through the most common development scenarios; at the same time, it provides the detail needed to tightly integrate custom code with the framework.
The appendixes provide supplemental information to what is contained in the chapters. This is material that, while not critical to an understanding of the individual chapters, is nonetheless important. The appendixes include items such as community resources and general DotNetNuke configuration items, as well as a detailed look at the new module manifest and a few key integration API points that are not well documented overall.

Liferay User Interface Development ReviewI just finished reading the book. I have written a technical review on my blog: [...]
In a glance a good book for the Java developer migrating his Liferay 5.2.3 code to the new Liferay 6 or for the Java developer that needs to customize the Liferay interface.
If you are a front end developer in charge of customizing Liferay you will need to have Java knowledge to get something from this book.
Liferay User Interface Development OverviewThis is a basic tutorial that teaches you how to use the tools provided by Liferay to create your own applications. It covers a lot of the material that has API references and documentation of the architecture and illustrates its key concepts with examples. If you have basic knowledge of Java Web applications, know the basic operational functionality of Liferay, and have written a servlet or JSP file, you are ready to get the most out of this book. Whether you are a web portal engineer or an experienced Liferay Portal developer, you can benefit from this book. You are not expected to have prior knowledge of Liferay theming.
