Backbase 4 RIA Development ReviewThis book is a good read for the more seasoned rich internet developer. I have had my fair share of frontend technologies and was ready for the next step. Backbase technology is a complex matter with a mature architecture and it's enterprise grade design and development principles are not always easy to understand.
The book's major strenght is on explaining the design principles of Backbase and the choices being made. Even when you decide that Backbase is not the platform for you, this books show so much insight on the Backbase vision towards the way frontends should be designed, it will probably change your way of development nonetheless.
The step by step examples and thorough explanation made my hands itch to start programming, test the examples in the book, and just play around with the framework. While reading I felt inspired to re think aspects of my most recent projects, and upcoming work. For me personally, the amount of inspiration I get, is heavily effecting the way I feel about a book. "Backbase 4 RIA Develoment" has hit this spot on!
For people just starting with webdevelopment, this book - or more likely Backbase Client Framework itself - might be one leap to far. If you have done some work in this field, this book can align your thoughts, strenghten your frontend vision, and prepare you for the next grade in frontend development.Backbase 4 RIA Development OverviewThis is a practical book, where every example is tested and all source code is available with the book. Each chapter ends with work on a sample application using the new things learned. At the end of the book there is a complete, usable Travel Blog application. This book is for web developers who want to develop applications using the Backbase Client Framework. It may also be interesting for web developers and web application architects who want to know more about XML-based web application architectures.

Symfony 1.3 Web Application Development ReviewI purchased this book around the beginning of November. Construction and print quality are both very good. From a writing standpoint, the book is easy to read and conversational. There are some typos (I've found around 10) but none of them are in code samples which is important. I'll be submitting these back to the publisher so later versions are corrected.
For those learning Symfony, this book is a mixed bag. Beginning with the positives, you will learn the basic approach to developing in Symfony. Areas I particularly liked include instruction on project setup (chap1&2), forms (chap4) and optimization (chap9).
On the downside, Propel is the ORM that is referenced throughout this text. There are virtually no code samples in regard to Doctrine. This is particularly egregious because Doctrine is the default ORM library for Symfony as of version 1.3. As Fabien Potencier (creator of Symfony) puts it, "As Doctrine is the future of symfony, we decided to make it the default choice when creating a new project". Don't assume the book contains code samples for both. It doesn't.
Like myself, you may find yourself using the Symfony website/forums A LOT to get additional information on topics. This is because the book is somewhat light on details. I would liken it much more in-line with the Visual QuickStart books that Peachpit produces. The idea being, get something up-and-running quickly.
The book does not cover Unit and Functional testing using the lime Testing Framework; a built-in library. This is a significant omission. Automated testing is an integral component of today's RAD programming frameworks (ala Rails).
As for Symfony 1.3 specific information, they do a pretty good job. For instance, the use of csrf_secret for securing forms is discussed. However, 1.3 offers easy ways to use Swiftmailer to send emails. This is not covered. The old pattern is used.
If you are going to use Propel and are a Symfony beginner, you'll be in good shape with this book. Otherwise, I'd say wait for 'Practical symfony 1.4 for Doctrine' or use the website's tutorials. The Symfony framework itself is a wonderful product. I've enjoyed using it immensely.Symfony 1.3 Web Application Development OverviewThis book is an example driven tutorial that takes you through the process of building Model-View-Controller-based web applications. It also covers best practices for better and quicker application development.This book is for PHP web developers who want to get started with Symfony 1.3. If you are already using Symfony 1.0 or are new to Symfony, you will learn how to use it in the best way to produce better applications faster.Basic knowledge of Object Oriented design and ORM will be quite helpful.

Agile Web Application Development with Yii 1.1 and PHP5 ReviewSometimes I read a tech book there are a few annoying errors that detract from the overall experience, but this one, the errors are so many and so egregious that it makes it impossible to follow along unless you are already a very highly skilled developer and can 'guess' what was meant.
For example, the author uses the InnoDB engine for his code examples, but fails to declare this on several of his schemas. This causes big problems as mySQL ships with MyISAM as the default database. Normally, schema should explicitly set the engine, particularly if you're not going to use the default!! Perhaps InnoDB is the default on his database, but the reality is that most people will probably be learning this framework against mySQL. Hopefully you're experienced enough with databases to catch this and figure out why the code doesn't work. Once you get past this 'gotcha', then you have to deal with code errors in almost every other example. It completely undermines my confidence in this writer's ability to teach the framework and make for hours of frustration as you try to track down why things aren't working. The writer clearly is an expert in Yii, but he's not much of a writer or instructor.
Then there's the general spelling errors. It seems to get worse as the book goes on. I've got 10 bucks that says this book was turned in by the author and published without any editorial review or proofreading at all.
Perhaps it's just me, but the Chapter on User Access Controls seems to be missing an entire section that would make the example work. He builds some tests, then builds the code, but doesn't cover getting the initial state set for a user with 'admin' level access. Another word, you run the code, but there's no 'user' setup who can then access the admin level pages he just spent time testing and developing ??? Perhaps this was another example of where the author suggests that you try and figure x, y or z out on your own as an "exercise".
Here's an example of some inelegant prose; how many typos can you find in this short block (I cut-and-pasted it directly from the pdf version):
One other small change we made as to add a simple link from the project details page so we could access this form form the application. The following line was added to the project show.php view file's list of link options:
[]
This gives us access to the new form.After that, I quit the book. Perhaps I'll be able to learn it better online.
I've read quite a few tech books over the years and this is a close contender for "Worst Book Ever". Unfortunately, it's the only book specifically on Yii right now. Hopefully the framework will continue to grow and somebody will write another one.Agile Web Application Development with Yii 1.1 and PHP5 OverviewThis is a step-by-step tutorial for developing web applications using Yii. If you are a PHP programmer with knowledge of object oriented programming and want to rapidly develop modern, sophisticated web applications, then this book is for you. No prior knowledge of Yii is required to read this book.

There were a total of two chapters that I found useful to a non-novice. One covered inheritance options in incredible details (which is great, since there are so many), and the last chapter gives lip service to covering common OO patterns with javascript. That's about it. "Introduction to creating objects and simple OO patterns in Javascript" would have been a much more apt title.Object-Oriented JavaScript: Create scalable, reusable high-quality JavaScript applications and libraries OverviewCreate scalable and reusable high-quality JavaScript applications and libraries using the concepts of object-oriented programming. This book is for the beginning to intermediate web developer who wants to solve web development problems with smart JavaScript. It does not assume any prior knowledge of JavaScript programming; however even if you already know some JavaScript, there will be plenty for you to learn here.

JavaScript Patterns ReviewIt's often difficult to find good intermediate to advanced technical books that help you get over the hump. This is most definitely one of those books, IMO, along with Javascript: The Good Parts by Crockford and High Performance JavaScript by Zakas.
If you're a beginner, even an ambitious beginner, such as an experienced programmer in another language, you don't want to start here. For beginners, I'd recommend Zakas (Javascript for Web Developers) as the most complete introduction to Javascript, the DOM and browser scripting; or Simply JavaScript from Sitepoint for a gentler introduction that emphasizes the separation of structured content (HTML), presentation (CSS) and behavior (scripting the DOM with Javascript).
OTOH, if you're more or less comfortable with core Javascript and the DOM but want to clarify and explore the many idiosyncracies and fine points of JS, this book really hits the sweet spot. The table of contents is available on Amazon or O'Reilly, so I won't recap it - but will avow that Stefanov both chooses his topics and covers and organizes his material very well. This is a precisely and well-written book, and the reader will infer that there must have be a lot of experience, previous history and discussions behind these 200+ pages. I've read the blogs of the majority of his technical reviewers and believe you're in good hands here. I'm really lovin' this book. The only caveat - don't expect a lot on browser scripting. However, I'd be surprised if the somewhat experienced, but non-ninja, Javascript programmer did not significantly take his/her knowledge to a higher level after reading JavaScript Patterns.JavaScript Patterns Overview
