Rapid Application Development With CakePHP (Volume 1) ReviewI bought this book for the kindle. I would not say that it is formatted with the Kindle in mind, but it is readable. Screenshots are too small to see.
The material covered is really the basic highlights for CakePHP. I have several books, and this author does not dive very deep into the code or the reasons why he is doing certain things. The author does conform to the standards, which are important for CakePHP and explains these well. The author assumes the reader has a firm understanding of PHP and OOP.
In spite of the shortcomings, I would have to say this is a nice quick reference to have handy on your Kindle. If you want to know more about the nuts and bolts of CakePHP and have more time to read a longer book, check out the book from PackIT.
I gave the book four stars. It is a quick read, does not cost much and the Author (who is clearly experienced in the technology) gives several important insights into programming with CakePHP that I have not read in other texts.Rapid Application Development With CakePHP (Volume 1) OverviewThis book was written by a web developer for web developers. A basic understanding of Object Oriented Programming (OOP) is useful, but not 100 percent required.Whether you are an advanced web developer or a beginner looking to learn CakePHP, this book promises to help you build simple and complex web sites, quickly and easily.The goal of this book is to provide a wide variety of useful functionality that is required by most websites today. In the final chapter, we will take all that we've learned and create one final large project.During this process, I will instill my knowledge in taking a project from start to finish including creating a scope of work to ensure we have accomplished our target goals.By the end of this book, you should be able to build fully functional websites using CakePHP. Hopefully, you should also be able to cut your development time at least in half, if not more!

concrete5 Beginner's Guide ReviewThis is very nice book about C5 CMS which covers a lot of ground. It starts with the installation chapter, followed by explaining basis working with C5 (adding/editing blocks, pages etc.)
Chapter 3 deals with the permission system and in chapter 4 is dedicated to add-ons (C5's plugins) which extend basic functionality of C5.
Chapter 5 gives very detailed explanation how to convert HTML template for C5 CMS. There are lot of details provided and reader is destined to succeed. :-)
After that there are chapters about customizing block layouts, advanced navigation, creating one's own add-on block, writing a package for C5...even writing dashboard extensions is covered.
Pretty impressive for a 300p book, language is easy to follow and I highly recommend it for every C5 user who consider that official docs is not very well structured.
Why not 5 stars?
Well, my complain is that at some point the author changes in high speed and there is not, imho, enough explanation of 'why' but the reader is just given 'how'.
However, I must admit that it is probably due to the way this Packt 's "Beginner's Guid" series is 'designed' and author has taken maximum from the given 'field'.concrete5 Beginner's Guide OverviewThis book is part of Packt's Beginner's Guide series. You will be guided through the set up of a Concrete5 site with step-by-step practical examples. This book is ideal for developers who would like to build their first site with Concrete5. I switched from Catalyst because of the community support. This is by far the best introduction to someone new to Rails and even web development. I would recommended learning Ruby first or even while you are reading this and David Black's Well-Grounded Rubyist is the best one I found. Yii 1.1 Application Development Cookbook ReviewAlexander Makarov not only is an active member of Yii's core development team but also a vivid contributor to its community and put a lot of experience into this excellent book. I am using Yii for quite a while now and thought I knew some tricks but this book really helps you getting a deep understanding of the framework's functionalities. It's not written for beginners but a very inspiring reference for intermediate Yii developers and presents a lot of solutions for everyday scenarios that aren't explained in much detail in the framework's wiki: Advanced profiling to find bottlenecks, customized logging functionalities, deployment using different environments (development and production versions), using customized folder structures, preventing XSS and CSRF attacks, using external code libraries (Zend, Kohana, PEAR) and getting the best out of existing Zii components (grid views, list views and data providers). One of the nice things about this book is that the topics are always accompanied by useful real world examples which - from a developer's point of view - makes them really easy to understand.
