WordPress and Flash 10x Cookbook ReviewI am a designer and write some Actionscript but would not consider myself a programmer. Most of my work is in content publishing, and I was very pleased with the non-technical descriptions of very complex technical processes. The section on the new keyframing in Flash 10 cleared up the topic for me, and I have been able to apply some of the settings I read about. Ektron Developer's Guide: Building an Ektron Powered Website (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThis is a good book that is applicable to developers, of course... it's the "Developers Guide"... but it's also good for trainers, power users, marketing/communications employees... all across the organization. It talks about the WHY as well as the WHAT and HOW; so, there are sections like "the importance of social networking" and "connecting to clients." Buy a few, because once people figure that out, they'll have trouble sharing.
Cons? You'll end up tagging a lot of pages because the index is a bit short, and the code samples are only in C# (so, VB folks will have to figure out how some of them map to C# themselves). Maybe someone should re-write all the samples in VB and post them somewhere? (hint, hint)
Overall, it's a good start to finish cms book that takes you seamlessly from overview to specifics with something for everyone in-between. WordPress 3 Complete Review
The reference to the word "complete" in this book's title correctly suggests that almost anyone can read (preferably re-read) and then apply what is learned when creating a website or blog "from scratch." In my case, I had retained professionals to do much of the work for me but reading this book as well as others published by Packt enabled me to become a much better-informed and more effective contributor to our collaboration. After identifying the "what" of that process, she devotes the bulk of her attention to the "how" and occasionally the "why."
Chapter 1: A "super easy-to-use" briefing on what WordPress offers
2: How to complete WP installations and connections
3: How to add and then manage content
4: A briefing/walk-through on non-blogging content and applications
5: How to manage the website's basic look
6: How to make your own theme (i.e. design and layout)
7: A briefing/walk-through on RSS feeds and podcasting
8: A briefing/walk-through on developing plugins and widgets
9: How to manage members of a community of users
10: How to create a non-blog website
11: Coverage of most important administrator tasks for WP-driven website
Note: I invoke the term "walk-through" for Chapters 4, 7 and 8 because Silver literally guides her reader through a step-by-step sequence to complete hundreds of incremental tasks that first involve installations and then modifications and refinements.
I also appreciate so much the fact that, whenever appropriate, Silver and her associates create a context, a frame-of-reference, when explaining how and why one (apparently small) component functions in relationship (i.e. coordination) with others. This is especially true of explanations of plugins and cross-connections such as are now being developed at my website (www.bobmorris.biz) that involve book reviews, interviews, and commentaries.
I highly recommend other PACKt texts such as WordPress Theme Design, WordPress 3 Site Blueprints, and WordPress 3.0 jQuery. By no means have I gained a complete understanding of all that these books cover. Fortunately, I can rely on others for the expertise that I lack. However, to repeat, a careful reading of books such as these provide the information and guidance non-technicians such as I need to understand (a) options to consider and what they offer, (b) trade-offs and the probably implications of each, and (c) the most appropriate issues to keep in mind when working with professionals.
Those who purchase this book are provided with a wealth of value-added benefits and supplementary resources that are identified on Page 4 and then at various points throughout the narrative.WordPress 3 Complete OverviewThis a comprehensive step-by-step tutorial packed with screenshots and examples for easy and quick pickup. This book is a guide to WordPress for both beginners and those who have slightly more advanced knowledge of WordPress. Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 with PHP: Training from the Source ReviewI just had my first pass at this book and must say Thank you to David Powers for a job well done! First of, he did not repeat verbatim his book on CS4 as some lazy authors would have, but instead teaches the new advantages of CS5 while giving you great lessons on zend frame work, cms and so on. The examples used are very practical and can be applied directly to your work unlike some books I have read where the examples are only of the authors imagination and you would be pressed to find a way to apply them. He puts to practice his experience with the forums he moderates and shares that experience with you. It would have taken me at least 2 years to get all the experience shared in this book. I can't believe I even offer solutions to questions in forums now, why? because I have read this book and the tips are great. Thanks for sharing your knowledge David. This book though is for intermediate users. Beginners should please buy his CS4 book first and then see this book as a continuation of that. Top it off with his CSS book and maybe his php solutions book if you want to be interested in php and then you can call yourself a web designer that knows his stuff. Intermediate users of Dreamweaver would find this book very valuable. I never knew the new features in CS5 until I used this book and boy was I glad I upgraded. Do you want to style wordpress CMS in dreamweaver, then get this book. Do you want to get interested in the Zend framework and jQuery framework, then this book is for you. Finally if you want great tips on how to use DW, then add this to his CS4 book. If this book was $200 it would still be a good buy, because just the server behaviors that you can create alone with the examples from the book is a great time saver.
If Mr Powers happen to read this review, my only request is that he should please come out with something in the line of questions and solutions in building web sites, so we can benefit from his experience with the questions and answers he always come across in the forums. Anyway, this would do for now.

Foundation Drupal 7: Learn How to Use the Drupal Framework to Quickly Build Feature-rich Websites ReviewI manage a Drupal development team and have stacks of Drupal Books and attend DrupalCon on a regular basis. One thing that is always true for those new to Drupal is the learning curve - it is steep. There are some things that you can do quickly and easily with little experience but soon you will hit the wall and start rummaging through the Drupal documentation site which in itself is a good tool but often is confusing for the true beginner. This process will be made more complex as Drupal 7 is new and has a number of changes from Drupal 6 so there will be a lag in seeing good tutorials and helpful hints build up in the community. That is where this book fills the gap - it can take the new Drupal user through the key components of setting up and using Drupal 7 in an understandable and accessible way. To aid this the authors have included a large number of screen shots and clear explanations so that you know clearly what to do and how to do.
For those who already have some Drupal experience this is a nice overview of Drupal 7. One thing not to miss is the 40 pages of appendices where more advanced topics are covered. I was very pleased to see a section on Search Engine Optimization (SEO). It is very unfulfilling to build a great site and then have no one find it, the SEO section gives you the basics on how to make your Drupal site findable. The other three sections - Drush, the commend line shell for Drupal; 50+ Contributed Modules to Spice Up Any SIte; and Views Recipes are all helpful and are a good follow up to the main body of the book.

WordPress 3 Plugin Development Essentials ReviewAt root, this book is an excellent overview of the techniques and issues which will be encountered by any developer -- however experienced -- when they are authorizing a plug-in using the WordPress plug-in API in WordPress 3. In particular, I appreciated the emphasis on organization and coding best practices. I've worked with plenty of plug-ins, and there's a lot of ugly, unmaintainable code out there. (And I've written some of it, too!) The fact that anybody looking to develop a plug-in who uses this book as a major reference will also get a guide to some best practices in writing software is a definite bonus.
The authors are very realistic about the limitations and benefits of the WordPress plug-in system. They observe that WordPress has a great deal of flexibility when it comes to coding style and organization -- and the result is that there's a low resistance to entry. Great for beginners, but it does mean that trusting the code you find is something you shouldn't do blindly. Clearly the authors want to emphasize that anybody looking to begin developing plug-ins should give some significant thought to the sustainability and quality of their work. Kudos to them!
The book doesn't cover an enormous number of different API functions, but it does give a good overview of the key hooks that are needed to get started programming for WordPress. Given the scope of what can be done in WordPress, it's really a better solution to solidly introduce some of the core techniques rather than try and cram a huge number of concepts down the throats of their readers.
I found the systematic approach taken by the book to be extremely effective -- I appreciated that the book intentionally had the reader introduce common errors into their plug-ins. Having encountered most of those issues by accident somewhere along the line, it's tremendously valuable to already have been made aware of some key elements.
I do think that this is a good book, and very worthwhile for the beginning plug-in developer. There are a few additional areas which I would have liked to have seen covered, however.
Although the book is very thorough in addressing programming best practices, it doesn't address the quality of output code at all. Valid HTML, consistent use of elements, semantics, and accessibility are all issues which deserve a significant mention in the programming of a WordPress extension -- however easily the plug-in can be maintained, if it doesn't produce high-quality output, this can be a major disadvantage for the plug-in. It is very dissatisfying to install a plug-in which does exactly what you need it to, but produces output which can't easily be styled or doesn't meet the standards required for your web site.
Nonetheless, there are no other issues which I felt were truly missed -- the book is well-written, thorough, and methodical. I can highly recommend it to anybody looking to start authoring WordPress plug-ins.WordPress 3 Plugin Development Essentials OverviewThis book will provide an easy to understand, step-by-step approach to building your own WordPress plugins from scratch. Up front, I want to explain why I think so highly of this book: It has prepared me well to work with technical and graphics specialists whom I have retained to transform my website into fully-functional, dynamic WordPress website. More specifically, to enhance that site "with captivating effects" of jQuery, a library of options and applications that can speed the time and reduces the complexity of writing custom JavaScripts. That is to say, Tessa Blakeley Silver and her colleagues have provided a wealth of information, insights, and advice that increases my knowledge base significantly.
Frankly, I do not as yet fully understand all of the material provided. While working my way through it, I highlighted key passages and compiled several pages of notes. This will facilitate, indeed expedite review of key points later. (I have also inserted a number of question marks!) I like the format strategy: Explain clusters of sequential tasks or issues that comprise a step-by-step process that begins with the first chapter and concludes with the appendix. These are among the focal points per chapter:
1: Core fundamentals, essential tools, background, and essentials
2: Getting jQuery into WordPress (WP), and creating first setup
Note: Three jQuery "secret weapons" are provided in the second chapter to improve and enhance using selectors and filters, manipulating CSS and elements in the DOM, and working with events and effects, respectively.
3: Two ways to "plugin" jQuery, WP theme basics, and WP plugin basics
4. Seamless event registration, getting set up, and form validation
5. jQuery animation basics, "grabbing" attention, "deeper" into animation
6. Understanding jQuery UI plugin, enhancing effects and user interface
7. AJAX primer, getting started with AJAX functionality
8. Code arsenal, "tips and tricks" re working in WP and jQuery
Then a "jQuery and WordPress Reference Guide" is provided in the Appendix and I especially appreciated the material provided in Pages 274-288 ("Getting the Most Out of WordPress"). Technical wizards may not need such reviews and reminders but I certainly do.
