Practical symfony 1.2 for Doctrine - second edition ReviewIf you're just starting out with symfony and doctrine, or are just wanting a refresher this is the main guide to get. It is the print version of the Jobeet tutorial that is available over at the symfony website [...], with a few added bells and whistles like an index.
Practical symfony contains enough information for a beginner to start their first project and work up to some of the more advanced features without getting so detailed as to overwhelm the reader.
If you are unsure whether to use symfony for your next project, I'd recommend to check out the online version before purchasing. However, if you've jumped in head first, grab your copy and help support the symfony framework - I'm sure you'll find it useful!

Practical symfony 1.3 & 1.4 for Doctrine ReviewHaving a hard copy of a computer book in hand when learning a new technology is a great thing - when the book is great, that is. However, Practical Symfony is not a great book, and given that it can be downloaded from the Symfony site, I do not feel after buying the book that it was work investing in a hard copy.
Symfony is a decent framework for building a Web application, and as lead developer of the Symfony project, Potencier certainly has the expertise to provide correct information about the subject. However, Potencier's expert knowledge often gets in the way of teaching the technology, and important subjects are glossed over and some items (such as how to display the debug toolbar) that may have seemed too trivial for inclusion by the author. For instance, the Doctrine_Query object is given half a page of discussion instead of the full chapter it deserves. One simply cannot get an adequate understanding of Symfony and its integration with Doctrine from this book alone. I find myself using my Google-fu and reading pages of online documentation for both Symfony and Doctrine just to figure out how to do basic things that I could have done easily outside of the framework. A book should effectively minimize this, but this one doesn't.
Practical Symfony is written in a very linear format. It is structured much like a SAMs "Teach Yourself... in 24 Hours" book, and suffers from the same structural defect as the worst books in that series. If you have 24 days to devote an hour or two to each day to a chapter, and you think up your own simple project from scratch and follow the book's process, you will learn the basics of the technology. However, if you are like me, and are trying to take over an existing project written by someone else and extend its functionality, this approach does not work. For working programmers, books that have solid chapters that can be read coherently by themselves are much more practical and deliver far more value, which is not the case with this book.
That being said, what ultimately cripples this book's usefulness is its abysmal index, which appears to have been generated by computer and not subsequently reviewed or tested by an actual human beings. For instance, there are two entries side by side for "Web Debug Toolbar" and "web debug toolbar", which point to different pages. This case insensitivity problem is indicative as well of the numerous capitalization errors in the text of this book.
Finally, this book is a translation from French, and sometimes the resulting English is cumbersome or incorrect. One frustrating example is the use of the word "serialization" to describe the process of Doctrine writing data from a PHP object to a database. While this process is conceptually similar to serialization. I found it highly confusing to see the term used in that context, which to me implies the use of the serialize() function or a comparable routine such as json_encode().
My conclusion is that if you want this book, download the PDF from the Symfony Web site. If you want to support the project, click the "Donate" button. Symfony 1.3 Web Application Development ReviewI purchased this book around the beginning of November. Construction and print quality are both very good. From a writing standpoint, the book is easy to read and conversational. There are some typos (I've found around 10) but none of them are in code samples which is important. I'll be submitting these back to the publisher so later versions are corrected.
For those learning Symfony, this book is a mixed bag. Beginning with the positives, you will learn the basic approach to developing in Symfony. Areas I particularly liked include instruction on project setup (chap1&2), forms (chap4) and optimization (chap9).
On the downside, Propel is the ORM that is referenced throughout this text. There are virtually no code samples in regard to Doctrine. This is particularly egregious because Doctrine is the default ORM library for Symfony as of version 1.3. As Fabien Potencier (creator of Symfony) puts it, "As Doctrine is the future of symfony, we decided to make it the default choice when creating a new project". Don't assume the book contains code samples for both. It doesn't.
Like myself, you may find yourself using the Symfony website/forums A LOT to get additional information on topics. This is because the book is somewhat light on details. I would liken it much more in-line with the Visual QuickStart books that Peachpit produces. The idea being, get something up-and-running quickly.
The book does not cover Unit and Functional testing using the lime Testing Framework; a built-in library. This is a significant omission. Automated testing is an integral component of today's RAD programming frameworks (ala Rails).
As for Symfony 1.3 specific information, they do a pretty good job. For instance, the use of csrf_secret for securing forms is discussed. However, 1.3 offers easy ways to use Swiftmailer to send emails. This is not covered. The old pattern is used.
If you are going to use Propel and are a Symfony beginner, you'll be in good shape with this book. Otherwise, I'd say wait for 'Practical symfony 1.4 for Doctrine' or use the website's tutorials. The Symfony framework itself is a wonderful product. I've enjoyed using it immensely.Symfony 1.3 Web Application Development OverviewThis book is an example driven tutorial that takes you through the process of building Model-View-Controller-based web applications. Agile Web Application Development with Yii 1.1 and PHP5 ReviewSometimes I read a tech book there are a few annoying errors that detract from the overall experience, but this one, the errors are so many and so egregious that it makes it impossible to follow along unless you are already a very highly skilled developer and can 'guess' what was meant.
For example, the author uses the InnoDB engine for his code examples, but fails to declare this on several of his schemas. This causes big problems as mySQL ships with MyISAM as the default database. Normally, schema should explicitly set the engine, particularly if you're not going to use the default!! Perhaps InnoDB is the default on his database, but the reality is that most people will probably be learning this framework against mySQL. Hopefully you're experienced enough with databases to catch this and figure out why the code doesn't work. Once you get past this 'gotcha', then you have to deal with code errors in almost every other example. It completely undermines my confidence in this writer's ability to teach the framework and make for hours of frustration as you try to track down why things aren't working. The writer clearly is an expert in Yii, but he's not much of a writer or instructor.
Then there's the general spelling errors. It seems to get worse as the book goes on. I've got 10 bucks that says this book was turned in by the author and published without any editorial review or proofreading at all.
Perhaps it's just me, but the Chapter on User Access Controls seems to be missing an entire section that would make the example work. He builds some tests, then builds the code, but doesn't cover getting the initial state set for a user with 'admin' level access. Another word, you run the code, but there's no 'user' setup who can then access the admin level pages he just spent time testing and developing ??? Perhaps this was another example of where the author suggests that you try and figure x, y or z out on your own as an "exercise".
Here's an example of some inelegant prose; how many typos can you find in this short block (I cut-and-pasted it directly from the pdf version):
One other small change we made as to add a simple link from the project details page so we could access this form form the application. The following line was added to the project show.php view file's list of link options:
[]
This gives us access to the new form.After that, I quit the book. Perhaps I'll be able to learn it better online.
I've read quite a few tech books over the years and this is a close contender for "Worst Book Ever". Unfortunately, it's the only book specifically on Yii right now. Hopefully the framework will continue to grow and somebody will write another one.Agile Web Application Development with Yii 1.1 and PHP5 OverviewThis is a step-by-step tutorial for developing web applications using Yii. If you are a PHP programmer with knowledge of object oriented programming and want to rapidly develop modern, sophisticated web applications, then this book is for you. No prior knowledge of Yii is required to read this book.

Beginning CakePHP: From Novice to Professional (Expert's Voice in Web Development) ReviewThe book is overall well written, however the series title is misleading. I could have easily labeled this 3 stars.
PROS:
- Well written. (Few tech authors have this skill)
- Overall good cover of the basics
- Full code is provided, author has a forum where he answers some questions.
- He shows good code practices
CONS:
- This book should be in the series: "From Novice to having some understanding". It does not cover ACL at all, and the cover of the basic Auth component is incredibly basic and lacking. Most of the examples are very simple, so you won't be getting to be a "Professional" with this book. The tile is ok "Beginning CakePHP" but by no means expect this book to cover in depth topics of challenging issues.
- The book is one big project that keeps adding on things - which is good. But the author decided to go for a Blog... Please another application? Pretty please? There are about a million blog tutorials out there, he could have gone the extra mile by giving us an interesting (i.e realistic) project. There is already a good blog tutorial on the cakephp.org site. Yes, the author does take the blog further in this book (he better, it's 300 pages) but still.
- Not the author's fault - but be warned that the book is for RC1 - and believe me, you will struggle figuring out why the provided code is not working and why so many errors (if you are using RC2 or beyond).
- All the examples except 1 are straight out of the box CAKEPHP built in things - which is fine, but real projects usually require you to stretch things, change some models to be used differently.
- The "Advanced features" chapter is a joke. It spends less than 1 page in most of those advance features. Basically, you are on your own. And a whopping of 6 pages on the forms helper. (Web applications live on forms, a whole book could be written on the topic).
I gave it 4 stars for being a clearly written book on CakePHP, but don't expect this book will be more than an introduction, with a few nice gems.Beginning CakePHP: From Novice to Professional (Expert's Voice in Web Development) OverviewAll other attempts at translating CakePHP for new users are either too technical or lack enough information. This book is tailored for those new to Cake and who want a thorough tutorial. The biggest advantage for reading this book is that it really stands alone in the repertoire of CakePHP documentation, and little work is scheduled to become available anytime soon.It's to a PHP developer's advantage to try out Cake and to get a favorable introduction to the framework, which is precisely what this book provides.Beginning CakePHP is one of the first if not the first book in the market that leads the reader through extensive web application development in CakePHP, one of the leading popular growing open source Web frameworks. It gives a how-to approach to Cake rather than a dictionary-type reference, that culminates in an extensive practical blogging application example.

Beginning Django Ecommerce (Expert's Voice in Web Development) ReviewThough I haven't yet completed this book, I like the author's writing style and the information he presents. I also like that fact that he has you write code by yourself instead of just suggesting 3rd party plug-ins to accomplish a particular task (unlike some other Django books). Though the title would suggest this book is only about E-Commerce, it isn't. It is a great introduction to Django and covers everything someone new to Django would need to know to get started.
I bought two Django books published by Apress at about the same time. The first one, Practical Django Projects - 2nd Edition, is a good book, but it has some errors in it, and the author has been unresponsive in addressing them, so they are not included in the books errata on Apress's website. Another negative is that the source code that is supposed to be included with the book wasn't for several months, and though it is now, it is incomplete.
This book also has some errors in it, but the author has been very responsive in commenting on them and getting them out to Apress's errata page so that people new to Django won't be frustrated and unable to move past them. This kind of dedication is very important and appreciated. The book is good on its own, but with the added support of the author, it is a great title.Beginning Django Ecommerce (Expert's Voice in Web Development) OverviewBeginning Django E-Commerce is the first book to guide web developers through producing an e-commerce site using Django, the most popular Python web development framework. Learning Website Development with Django: A beginner's tutorial to building web applications, quickly and cleanly, with the Django application framework (From Technologies to Solutions) ReviewThis book will basically guide you along the development of a web application that allows users to submit and share bookmarks. Unlike the online Django documentation, where snippets of code are presented to illustrate usage of particular features, this book takes you from start to finish of a complete web application. As other reviews point out, the book covers many popular features found in modern sites, including ajax, tags, pagination and rss.
The book is written based on Django 0.96 and there are a few places where the code breaks under Django 1.0. However, I didn't find debugging the code a big deal. As a matter of fact, it was a great opportunity for me to use the online Django documentation. You will eventually need to use Django's documentation anyway when you start writing your own apps.
If you don't want to debug, here are the code changes that you will need to make for the code to work with Django 1.0:

This is a great book for getting started with Django. Django 1.0 Website Development ReviewLet me preface this review by saying that I'm a professional software developer. I work for a mid-size communications company, and one of my tasks over the past 6 months has been investigating new web technologies to help us develop more modern, best-practices web applications.
I started messing around with Django around 5 months ago, by reading the official website documentation and the online Django book (which were both great resources), but I felt that what was lacking from my experiences was a complete, best-practices walk through of building a full website with Django. As I'm sure most of you know, the best way to get comfortable with a new technology is to use it to build something. This is when I started checking out other Django books on Amazon and came across this one.
This book walks you through building a complete social bookmarking site (similar to [...]) from scratch. The author does an amazing job of introducing you to Django and starts with the basics, working up to more and more complex things. I was surprised how well this book was written, and how easy it was to understand the code and explanations without much thinking. By Chapter 4 (45 pages in) you've already implemented a full user authentication system and user portal. You're able to display bookmarks, and much more. The author is not long-winded, and his writing style reminds me in many ways of Dennis Ritchie and Brian Kernighan (authors of the infamous book: 'The C Programming Language').
As to what the book covers, it walks you through everything from the installation of Django to depolying Django on production servers once the site has been finished. It does an excellent job of discussing useful deployment techniques including caching, in only a few lines of code. Furthermore, the author will show you how to add ajax effects to your website to increase usability, using the jQuery framework (an incredibly popular and powerful javascript framework). It even covers usage of some jQuery plugins (like live searching of content).
I frequently use this book as a reference guide (the cover is beginning to wear out) as the examples are really easy to navigate, and the descriptions are verbose.
Overall, I'd say this book is a must read for any Django developer who wants to really grasp the inner workings of the Django framework. It's easy to read, very concise, and filled with useful, best-practices information that you will not want to miss.Django 1.0 Website Development OverviewA beginner's guide to design, develop, and deploy a fully-featured dynamic website using the features of Django 1.0. Professional Ajax, 2nd Edition (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThe book does a good job academically of showing how Ajax has evolved (itself a debatable topic) and how it is used in modern-day applications. The book doesn't marry the reader to any one particular web development framework, effectively citing examples in PHP, .NET, and JavaServer Pages. Practically, the authors exhibit a proper mix of (X)HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Dynamic HTML and XmlHttpRequests, showing how the technologies are blended for developing next-gen UIs.
There are great discussions of advanced concepts like JSON, REST, and SOAP-based web services and how Ajax is incorporated into them. Also, coding to allow cross-browser compatibility is stressed throughout the book, particularly in instantiating an XMLHTTP object across IE, Firefox, Mozilla and Safari. The authors' zXml and XParser are cited as two of several third-party libraries to seamlessly pull this off.
Some gems that I found within the book include Chapter 8 - "Web Site Widgets", which is very helpful, giving practical demonstrations and usable code for several Ajax-driven mini-applications we could all use in our web projects. Chapter 7's case study of a Google Suggest-style autocomplete text box was very elegant, using JSON as an alternative to XML's typically verbose payload. Chapter 2 - "Ajax Patterns" also abstracts many of the features common to apps using Ajax (i.e., polling, autosave, incremental updating). All are well done and greatly appreciated.
Syntactically, the authors' programming style is very clever. While not exhaustively described, the book shows how to feign object-oriented programming in client-side JavaScript, making liberal use of such time-saving coding tricks like faux classes, inline function definitions and prototypes.
In criticism, the one chapter I found to be a letdown was Chapter 5 - "RSS/Atom", mainly because I'm very involved with work in that space. A terse description of content syndication is presented, but then followed exclusively by an analysis the FooReader.NET web-based RSS aggregator app. It's nice, but doesn't take a more holistic view of how Ajax is being used elsewhere. I would have also liked to see examples in emerging platforms, specifically Ruby on Rails and the Ajax support built directly into that web framework.
But overall this is a very good introductory read for experienced programmers wanting to get up to speed on the next big thing in advanced web UI development. I'm a better, more aware, more prepared developer for having read it.Professional Ajax, 2nd Edition (Programmer to Programmer) OverviewProfessional Ajax 2nd Edition provides a developer-level tutorial of Ajax techniques, patterns, and use cases. The book begins by exploring the roots of Ajax, covering how the evolution of the web and new technologies directly led to the development of Ajax techniques. A detailed discussion of how frames, JavaScript, cookies, XML, and XMLHttp requests (XHR) related to Ajax is included. After this introduction, the book moves on to cover the implementation of specific Ajax techniques. Request brokers such as hidden frames, dynamic iframes, and XHR are compared and contrasted, explaining when one method should be used over another. To make this discussion clearer, a brief overview of HTTP requests and responses is included.
Once a basic understanding of the various request types is discussed, the book moves on to provide in-depth examples of how and when to use Ajax in a web site or web application. Different data transmission formats, including plain text, HTML, XML, and JSON are discussed for their advantages and disadvantages. Also included is a discussion on web services and how they may be used to perform Ajax techniques. Next, more complex topics are covered. A chapter introducing a request management framework explores how to manage all of the requests inside of an Ajax application. Ajax debugging techniques are also discussed.
The last part of the book walks through the creation of two full-fledged Ajax web applications. The first, FooReader.NET, is an Ajax-powered RSS reader. The second, called AjaxMail, is an Ajax-enabled email system. Both of these applications incorporate many of the techniques discussed throughout the book.
Professional Ajax 2nd edition is written for Web application developers looking to enhance the usability of their web sites and web applications and intermediate JavaScript developers looking to further understand the language. Readers should have familiarity with XML, XSLT, Web Services, PHP or C#, HTML, CSS. This book is not aimed at beginners without a basic understanding of the aforementioned technologies. Also, a good understanding of JavaScript is vitally important to understanding this book. Those readers without such knowledge should instead refer to books such as Beginning JavaScript, Second Edition (Wrox, 2004, ISBN: 978-0-7645-5587-9) and Professional JavaScript for Web Developers (Wrox, 2005, ISBN: 978-0-7645-7908-0).
Professional Ajax 2nd edition adds nearly 200 pages of new and expanded coverage compared to the first edition. Some of the new topics covered here include:

One of the valid criticisms of the profusion of JavaScript frameworks is lack of documentation. This valuable book is the best possible boost to jQuery, one of the most popular frameworks in the pack. This documentation provides a gentle introduction to jQuery concepts and at the same time gives you the tools and examples to do some wickedly cool stuff.
Although jQuery is advanced JavaScript, you don't have to be an advanced scripter to use it or to follow the flow of this book. In fact, the book makes very clear that, aside from the particular advantages of this framework, jQuery will be especially welcomed by Web workers who are familiar with the value and syntax of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Someone who knows CSS well yet is weak on JavaScript will have no trouble at all slipping in advanced functionality to Web pages or applications with the help of this guide.
I have reviewed many books dealing with Web tech, CSS, and JavaScript. Even with the best of these books, I have often complained of lack of attention to scripting the display and behavior of data tables. This book totally eclipses every other book I have studied in this regard. As a designer of Web reporting tool interfaces, with a heavy use of data display, this book would get a 5-star rating for that alone.
The fine chapter on scripting data tables is not alone of course. The book handily deals with form manipulation and all sorts of approaches to dynamically modifying Web pages.
The book comes with not one, but two supporting Web pages where you can see the code in action and download it for play and profit.
I think getting this book is a no-brainer if you want to pick up on the latest practical trends in Web development -- as well as save yourself a lot of work and fuss.

jQuery Mobile ReviewI thought this book "okay" for getting started with jQuery Mobile. However, I thought this book was going to be more than just a small introduction to jQuery Mobile. Don't get me wrong, it does provide enough information to get you going in developing your jQuery Mobile website, BUT it lacks in proper documentation.
This book was below my expectations for an O'Reilly book. You are better off just going to the jQuery Mobile website, and reading their documentation in all honesty. jQuery in Action ReviewjQuery is a Javascript framework that aims to let you think structurally and conceptually, rather than worrying about syntax and other details. In that largely succeeds, and so does this remarkable book.
Every technical book should be like this one; having written a few myself, I know that's a tall order. "jQuery in Action" is concise but clear, humorous but not silly, and answers all the questions it raises, quickly. The reader is never left wondering "But what about..." for more than a sentence or two. The authors clearly gave a lot of thought to pedagogy, because things are explained in a clear way which progresses naturally from chapter to chapter. Learning jQuery 1.3 ReviewI'm a programmer with lots of experience in several languages, although I never learned JavaScript -- nor had I done client-side web programming outside of static (X)HTML and CSS.
I decided it was time to close this gap, so I chose JQuery as my framework to abstract away the headaches I'd heard about JavaScript, and I chose Learning jQuery 1.3 as my means to learn the platform.
The book provides an excellent tour of jQuery's capabilities, although the jQuery UI package is not covered (the publisher offers this in a different book).
Each chapter covers a different aspect of jQuery programming, starting with simple examples and finishing with complex/completed functionality. Since this was my first dive into browser-side programming, I also found the book to be an excellent overview for creating the various behaviors I'd seen in practice (such as animating web content, validating forms, and refreshing data without refreshing the page).
New concepts are introduced along the way, and potential "gotchas" are exposed by presenting them as what you think you'd do next -- but are then followed by an explanation as to why it's the wrong thing to do. The book also contains an overview of many of the more popular jQuery plug-ins.
You're best off downloading the accompanying source code if you want to try the examples yourself, because non-relevant portions of the code and accompanying CSS don't always appear in the text. My only complaint lies with the example code: It isn't always well-commented. jQuery's syntax and extensive chaining can sometimes be non-intuitive, so good commenting is a must in a book like this.

jQuery Pocket Reference ReviewI've enjoyed previous books by David Flanagan and decided to read jQuery Pocket Reference. I thought I would quickly skim through the chapters because I considered myself fairly proficient in jQuery. After the first chapter and Flanagan's explanations of jQuery's method, object, and function ('a' versus 'the'), I decided to read more in-depth. I'm glad, because this is one of the best books I've read in O'Reilly's Pocket Reference library. I was surprised to have found a one which has a perfect balance between API, examples, and explanation.
For developers who want to learn jQuery, you will be able to learn nearly all you need to get started from this book. When I first heard about jQuery, I purchased a much larger book, which ended up being about 80% reprinting the API on jquery.com. If you're like me, and you prefer insight, hints, and gotchas which encourage you to write some code, then this book is perfect for you.
For developers familiar with jQuery, you may learn a little from this book. Flanagan covers a lot of overloads to common jQuery functions. Some of them, I never knew existed. The recent release of jQuery 1.5 has actually added more functionality than what is covered in this book.
The only thing I found a little odd about this book is how the jQuery Selectors chapter was at the end of the book. Considering jQuery is a framework for querying the DOM, using selectors, I would expect that content to be the first covered. On the other hand, as a reference, you may expect the most used content at the end of the book. Luckily, Flanagan knows what he's doing and tells you to review the Selectors chapter if you're rusty or unfamiliar.jQuery Pocket Reference Overview
