Canvas Pocket Reference: Scripted Graphics for HTML5 (Pocket Reference (O'Reilly)) ReviewSummary: The book provides examples to explain feature after feature of canvas, carefully mentioning the concepts behind the feature being explained (strokes, gradients, transparency, text, shadows, etc). This book will explain how things are done and after that, you'll be able to grab sample code from the web and actually be able to customize it to what you need.
The book contains two chapters that are completely different of each other. The first chapter explains how things work in canvas. For example, whatever you draw uses a style that is defined separately from the drawing code, similar to the separation of content and presentation in HTML/CSS. The way you draw graphics, fill them, color them, etc is different than traditional environments such as Java graphics. At the end of the first chapter, you'll know what can be done using canvas and how.
The second chapter is a reference of the canvas methods, which will be the details needed once you're actually coding. Fortunately, there are not that many methods in canvas. If unfamiliar with pocket reference books from O'Reilly, they are small, you can carry it in the back pocket of your jeans. If you do not wear jeans or shorts at work, then you may not be the intended audience for this book. I needed a book that explains how to use bitmap images and do image processing in them. The few pages in the book on those topics made the book worthwhile. I'm looking forward to see the Web when most sites use canvas (instead of Flash and the like) for simple graphic animations or just improved user interfaces. (Disclaimer: I was provided a hard-copy of the book from O'Reilly for review and returned it back).
Canvas Pocket Reference: Scripted Graphics for HTML5 (Pocket Reference (O'Reilly)) Overview
The Canvas element is a revolutionary feature of HTML5 that enables powerful graphics for rich Internet applications, and this pocket reference provides the essentials you need to put this element to work. If you have working knowledge of JavaScript, this book will help you create detailed, interactive, and animated graphics -- from charts to animations to video games -- whether you're a web designer or a programmer interested in graphics.

Canvas Pocket Reference provides both a tutorial that covers all of the element's features with plenty of examples and a definitive reference to each of the Canvas-related classes, methods, and properties.

You'll learn how to:

Draw lines, polygons, and curves
Apply colors, gradients, patterns, and transparency
Use transformations to smoothly rotate and resize drawings
Work with text in a graphic environment
Apply shadows to create a sense of depth
Incorporate bitmapped images into vector graphics
Perform image processing operations in JavaScript

Adaptive Web Design: Crafting Rich Experiences with Progressive Enhancement ReviewWith this short but well-written book, you'll learn the key principles and primary techniques for designing web pages that can adapt to devices with different capabilities and display constraints, and are accessible to users equipped with assistive technologies such as screen readers, using only best practices revolving around the effective application of semantic markups, cascading style sheets (CSS), and Javascript.
The book explains in simple terms what designing web pages with progressive enhancements in mind entails: Keep the initial design simple. Focus first on the semantic markups and basic stylings you can safely use across browsers and devices, then if feature detection code incorporated into the subject web page indicates that a targeted feature is supported, layer on the bells and whistles programmatically through the use of Javascript or CSS rule sets.
The author provides just enough examples to illustrate the concepts under discussion. If you are just starting to learn about adaptive web design, this book will help you get started in the right direction more quickly than the Filament Group's Designing with Progressive Enhancement: Building the Web that Works for Everyone book. The latter, however, does provide a slightly more in-depth discussion of adaptive web design and a more extensive collection of examples than this book.Adaptive Web Design: Crafting Rich Experiences with Progressive Enhancement Overview

Smashing HTML5 (Smashing Magazine Book Series) ReviewI don't know if this book was mis-marketed, mis-titled, or just a misguided effort, but in any case I found myself bored and irritated by the first 200 or so pages, and little-impressed by the remainder. I feel that a book which claims to 'smash' into HTML5 should not spend more than a chapter or two explaining the DOM, HTML (4 and prior) and CSS. If you don't know the fundamentals of how a web page is constructed, there are literally thousands of books and other resources to get you started, many of which free, and most of which costing much less than the $39.99 list price on this one. There are maybe 50 pages of useful HTML5-specific info here. The rest is web dev 101 and not at all welcome in a book titled Smashing HTML5.Smashing HTML5 (Smashing Magazine Book Series) OverviewWelcome to HTML5 - the future of the Web

HTML5: Designing Rich Internet Applications (Visualizing the Web) ReviewPlain and simple, this book provides the basics to get started with HTML5 and CSS3 in a proper format. Coming from a 10yr. veteran of HTML4 and XHTML, I found the book to be well suited for beginners and us experts alike. You need books like this to help leverage the very fundamentals that are often overshot by the rest of your community. How many times have you gone back to see proper usage for your tags or attributes? I like good clean books like this to keep me grounded. Personally I own a good collection of books by Matthew David as his writing style is point blank.
to Brooklynite: Maybe you should get more in touch with your fellow developers and designers. Lorem Ipsum is standard practice for templating and concepting. If you didn't grasp that this book isn't a "tutorialfest" for copy and paste code, maybe you should look elsewhere instead of leaving a one star review. There are a few misprints and some code mishaps, but nothing that you couldn't intelligently work around.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great introduction and place to start with HTML5 and CSS3. Also the updated site for reference and code is [...]HTML5: Designing Rich Internet Applications (Visualizing the Web) Overview

The HTML5 JavaScript Model (Visualizing the Web) ReviewI bought this little gem on my Android G1 the other day while waiting in the dentist's office. HTML5 Digital Classroom, (Book and Video Training) ReviewI got this one for a family member who wanted to start with HTML, CSS, and Javascript, to design websites. First, I like the fact that it comes with a CD containing examples and video lessons. Second, I like the fact that it's about CSS 3 and HTML 5.
One caveat for beginners is that you probably want to start with lesson 2, then 3, then 6, 7, 8, because lesson 1 is talking about some new stuff in HTML 5, but you probably don't care about what's new, rather where to start learning, which is lesson 2.
Thanks for the great book.HTML5 Digital Classroom, (Book and Video Training) OverviewA complete training package—full-color book and instructional DVD—teaches you HTML5

What Is HTML5 ReviewA good read. The tone and content of the article is simple, allowing for quick assimilation.
The author has not made this into a language syntax. The article traces the history of HTML, starting with large documents, lots of links to other documents and now to a collage, a mashup based approach where content resides in multiple web servers. The article correlates the use of Javascript and Flash in traditional HTML and the power that comes with HTML5. Attached some choice snippets from the article
* Once you really understand HTML5, you'll change the way you think about the web.
* HTML5 is again the most usable and indexable tool available for web content; the content is even richer than before
* The winners in an HTML5 world are those who stop fearing being stolen from, and actually start handing out their candy to every kid on the block
What Is HTML5 OverviewHTML5: Everyone's using it, nobody knows what it is. I realize that sounds more like a line out of an existential movie - maybe Waiting for Godot or a screenplay by Sartre - than a statement about HTML5. But it's really the truth: most of the people using HTML5 are treating it as HTML4+, or even worse, HTML4 (and some stuff they don't use). The result? A real delay in the paradigm shift that HTML5 is almost certain to bring. It's certainly not time to look away, because by the time you look back, you may have missed something really important: a subtle but important transition centered around HTML5.

Pro HTML 5 Programming ReviewWeb development is a rapidly changing area--especially with HTML5. The authors of this book are commendable for their efforts on this cutting-edge topic. I learned a lot on many topics by using this book including:
--New and deprecated HTML elements

This book opens up a lot of new possibilities for web development on the client side. By reading and using the examples offered in the book, it helps me to think different projects can be beneficial by using HTML5. As with any emerging new technology, HTML5 is still changing and evolving. This book is a great starting point.

HTML, XHTML & CSS All-In-One For Dummies ReviewI knew nothing about html, css or anything else related to building websites before I bought this book. I needed to develop a custom website for my new small business, and didn't want to spend $2000+ for someone else to do it. Reading this book was (is) very enjoyable and formatted in a very easy-to-understand manner (and I don't really like reading books), and I was actually able to apply the information to real-world situations for building my first website and writing all of the code myself.
One of the best parts is how easy it is to use the TOC and index to re-reference topics when I need to insert new code of a specific topic. Plus, the included software / content on the CD-ROM is extremely helpful (Aptana is great!).
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to build a great foundation for developing websites by writing XHTML code. The Styling with CSS minibook helps you get the exact custom look for your website. I still have to delve into JavaScript and PHP to enhance my website's functionality to allow my visitors to download files, and I'm excited to keep learning from this wonderful book!
P.S. I ordered the book at 5:30 PM on a Thursday evening, and it arrived at my door on Friday afternoon just before noon (with standard shipping)! Thanks again for the great service, Amazon.HTML, XHTML & CSS All-In-One For Dummies OverviewA complete and fully updated reference for these key Web technologies

HTML5 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) ReviewHTML5 Step by StepHTML5 Step by Step is a good introduction to HTML for the complete novice. "Step by Step" is literally the approach taken in the book, with explicit instructions for each action to be taken. I would not hesitate to recommend this as a first text for the business or hobby user; experienced HTML authors or developers looking for cutting-edge HTML5 features should look elsewhere.
The book uses a Microsoft landscape, so the editing tool of choice is Notepad, and the browser absorbing the most attention is Internet Explorer 9. Users of other operating systems can use the text, but they'll need to be savvy enough to translate the Microsoft terminology to their own platform ( which might be beyond the abilities of a true beginner ). Following the example code using Ubuntu and vi, I did not experience any significant problems.
HTML authoring tools are not covered in order to focus on the underlying HTML building blocks.
Since the instructions provided for the accompanying exercises are so explicit, they consume a great deal of print real estate. That does not leave much room for advanced features of HTML5, and you won't find those here. Hence, once you complete the exercises, this isn't a book you'll retain for reference.

HTML5 24-Hour Trainer (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThe title "HTML5" might suggest that this is about "HTML 5". In truth, this is a book about learning HTML and CSS, and has only a little to offer in the way of the latest version.
While the last 10% of the book does address some of the new features of HTML, most of the other 90% teaches the basics of HTML (for example, 7 pages dedicated to the basics of unordered lists). And, in case that's not enough, the accompanying DVD includes TWO videos on unordered lists...one on inserting them, and one on styling them. The preface claims this book is for beginners as well as for the "working professional who just needs a quick brush-up..." Don't believe it. If you are an experienced HTML programmer looking to learn the latest features of HTML 5, you would be better off looking for a book that includes much less "brush-up" material.
As a book for beginners, this is well written and organized (something I generally count on from Wrox press). The emphasis on using CSS (cascading style sheets) is appropriate, putting newcomers on the right track by teaching them early on to separate content from style. The value of the videos is questionable, however. They largely duplicate the written content. I find it hard to imagine that very many people prefer narrated videos of people typing HTML code over typing it themselves with a textbook.
If you are just starting out with HTML, hoping to learn the basics and get a glimpse of the latest HTML5 has to offer, then this is a good book. Otherwise, experienced HTML/CSS users should look elsewhere.HTML5 24-Hour Trainer (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewComprehensive written and interactive instruction for learning HTML5
HTML is the core technology for building websites. Today, with HTML5 opening the Internet to new levels of rich content and dynamic interactivity, developers are looking for information to learn and utilize HTML5. HTML5 Canvas ReviewIf you are interested in learning the basics of HTML5 Game Development using the Canvas, this book is packed with information and examples! I had originally chosen it for Chapter 5 which goes into methods of applying game physics like gravity, elasticity, friction, etc., but the book does an excellent job of covering all the fundamentals and then leading you through the development of games like Space Raiders, Geo Blaster, and Micro Tank. There is a lot of code and examples so you can get familiar with the fundamentals in smaller bits before you start wiring them up together into larger games.
Of course, there is a lot of information on drawing shapes, images, and text on the canvas as well as working with audio and video independent of creating games, but applying all of this knowledge to create games is really what kept me interested cover-to-cover.HTML5 Canvas Overview
No matter what platform or tools you use, the HTML5 revolution will soon change the way you build web applications, if it hasn't already. HTML5 is jam-packed with features, and there's a lot to learn. This book gets you started with the Canvas element, perhaps HTML5's most exciting feature. Learn how to build interactive multimedia applications using this element to draw, render text, manipulate images, and create animation.

Whether you currently use Flash, Silverlight, or just HTML and JavaScript, you'll quickly pick up the basics. CSS Cookbook, 3rd Edition (Animal Guide) ReviewI have been designing and building HTML pages since mid-1994 and I am amazed at how much coding has changed in the past 15 years.
Back then building websites was pretty straight forward, you used tables to create columns and filled them up with text and graphics. Web designs were very basic, fixed width was the norm and there was not much of a difference between the two most popular browsers of the era, Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer 3.0.
Starting in the early 2000s, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) dramatically changed web design and page coding. CSS enabled designers and coders to build more attractive and interesting websites. However, coding pages and then making them work in various browsers - like IE 6, IE 7, IE 8, Mozilla 2.5, Mozilla 3.0 and Chrome - became far more challenging than just laying out tables. Making the learning curve even steeper was the popularity of JavaScript and more recently AJAX, which is the combination of CSS and JavaScript.
Many "old-time" coders tried to stick with table-based layouts, but it was easy to see that basic HTML would not longer cut it and CSS was the way to go. I stopped using tables and educated myself on how to use CSS.
In the early 2000s, I purchased several CSS books, including the first edition of CSS Cookbook. That book turned out to be the most useful because O'Reilly's "Cookbook " format is based on question and answer rather than the other CSS books, which focused on basic tutorials.
With the CSS Cookbook, I was able to look up "How to build a two column page," which would provide me with sample code as opposed to going through a basic CSS tutorial. I was able to learn quickly.
I was happy to discover that the third edition of CSS Cookbook has come up and it has been completely updated with how to create rounded corners with JavaScript and using Lightbox to display images as well as a chapter on how to use JQuery. It will also provide you with the basic CSS instructions on how to make one, two and three column layouts and how to set up floats.
If you are new to CSS, you should consider buying another CSS book, but if you know basic HTML and CSS and want to bring your skills up to the next level, I highly recommend reading this book.CSS Cookbook, 3rd Edition (Animal Guide) Overview

Getting Good with Javascript ReviewBased on my experience with Rockable Press publications in the past, I was a bit hesitant to purchase this book. Is it a good primer on Javascript? I think so, but the number of spelling and grammatical errors are unacceptable and very distracting. Simple concepts are obfuscated by glaring spelling and grammatical errors. Here are some highlights: using "you've" instead of "you'd"; "now" instead of "know"; "folowing" instead of "following"; and my personal favorite: every other page in chapter 2 has a page header of "Baiscs".
Rockable Press should be embarrassed that they released a book that could be considered a rough draft. The errors are so common and egregious, it is comical. At best, it is an amateurish attempt at publishing a book. If you can find your way through the grammatical mistakes, I think you'll find a decent introduction to Javascript. However, I'd wait until someone at Rockable Press decides to actually edit this book before purchasing.Getting Good with Javascript Overview

HTML5 and CSS3: Develop with Tomorrow's Standards Today (Pragmatic Programmers) ReviewYou can learn the basic new features of HTML5 and CSS3 from a lot of freely available resources. However, this book is invaluable because it goes beyond simply laying out how to use the new features and syntax, focusing more on how to practically use them to better a user's experience on your website. It doesn't simply subscribe mindlessly to the hype surrounding HTML5.
Even more importantly, each feature has a "Falling Back" section that describes how to implement the feature outside of HTML5/CSS3 on browsers that do not yet support it (usually using JavaScript) or how to otherwise best gracefully degrade.
Highly recommended.HTML5 and CSS3: Develop with Tomorrow's Standards Today (Pragmatic Programmers) Overview
HTML5 and CSS3 are the future of web development, but you don't have to wait to start using them. Even though the specification is still in development, many modern browsers and mobile devices already support HTML5 and CSS3. This book gets you up to speed on the new HTML5 elements and CSS3 features you can use right now, and backwards compatible solutions ensure that you don't leave users of older browsers behind. This book gets you started working with many useful new features of HTML5 and CSS3 right away. Gone are the days of adding additional markup just to style a button differently or stripe tables. You'll learn to use HTML5's new markup to create better structure for your content and better interfaces for your forms, resulting in cleaner, easier-to-read code that can be understood by both humans and programs. You'll find out how to embed audio, video, and vector graphics into your pages without using Flash. You'll see how web sockets, client-side storage, offline caching, and cross-document messaging can ease the pain of modern web development. And you'll discover how simple CSS3 makes it to style sections of your page. Throughout the book, you'll learn how to compensate for situations where your users can't take advantage of HTML5 and CSS3 yet, developing solutions that are backwards compatible and accessible. You'll find what you need quickly with this book's modular structure, and get hands-on with a tutorial project for each new HTML5 and CSS3 feature covered. "Falling Back" sections show you how to create solutions for older browsers, and "The Future" sections at the end of each chapter get you excited about the possibilities when HTML5 and CSS3 reach widespread adoption. Get ready for the future---in fact, it's here already.

Stunning CSS3: A project-based guide to the latest in CSS (Voices That Matter) ReviewJust the book I've been looking for. Its project based approach with downloadable files from the book's website makes learning easy. It's not a beginners book - you need a reasonable grasp of HTML and basic CSS to put it to good use - but it teaches CSS3 very effectively. So much vital info is packed into it, especially about media queries, embedding fonts and CSS graphic techniques. I also found it a vital reference listing loads of useful links under each topic for exploring the nooks and crannies of CSS3. Finally, with so much interest in Responsive Web Design now that CSS media queries are supported on A class browsers, it will prove an excellent introduction to anyone wanting to build a site that adapts to the multitude of browsing devices flooding the market in 2011 - including iPhones, iPads, netbooks, notebooks and even widescreen desktops. Introducing HTML5 (Voices That Matter) ReviewHTML5 is creating more and more a name for itself in our industry, but while it excites those on the cutting edge of web technology, many are left feeling uncertain about it. Its ongoing development has been victim of politics, fragmentation and more, leaving few to have a good grasp of its current status. However, a lot of the technologies that make up HTML5 (and more) have become mature, even implemented across all the latest browsers--but did you know that? If you've kept an arms length to everything going on with HTML5, now is the time to dive into its waters and explore.
Fortunately, you don't have to do it all by yourself: just get Introducing HTML5, written by Bruce Lawson (Opera) and Remy Sharp (Left Logic).
Exactly as its name implies, Introducing HTML5 is an introduction to all the new semantics and application-oriented technologies that make up the HTML5 spec. You don't have to be a web development expert to read this, but you'll come out closer to one when you've finished. All you need is a good grasp of web standards-based techniques, e.g. semantic markup; separation of structure, presentation and behavior; and accessibility. Bruce and Remy will teach you everything you need to know to bring your skill set to the next level.
Starting out light, Introducing HTML5 first teaches you the most important new HTML5 elements and their semantic purposes, which is especially helpful if, like me, you kept an eye on these since the early stages of HTML5, but got confused as their meanings were changed or redefined.
The book continues with the new HTML5 Forms, serving as a nice segue into the more JavaScript-reliant HTML5 Audio and Video, before it hunkers down on the real new technologies in HTML5, starting with Canvas and going all the way to the Messages, Web Workers and Web Sockets APIs.
Throughout the book, Bruce and Remy do a great job at not just introducing the new technologies, but informing you exactly of what does and doesn't work in which browsers. Even the latest releases of browsers have some glaring bugs here and there, but where fixes are available, they are presented, and where not, workarounds explained. As a result, Introducing HTML5 is a tremendously practical book, going well beyond a surface-level introduction and straight-up teaching you how to wield these new technologies today.
One thing I am personally very happy about is how the book teaches you how to implement things in an accessible way (via ARIA or otherwise), making sure that visitors to your sites aren't left out. HTML5 is exciting, but our excitement shouldn't come at the cost of accessibility--and following Bruce and Remy's advice, it won't.
The compact but dense information in Introducing HTML5 means that in just an afternoon or two, you'll find yourself brimming with new knowledge, excitement and ideas for making your websites or web applications richer, more exciting and more powerful. All in all, a highly recommended read.Introducing HTML5 (Voices That Matter) OverviewSuddenly, everyone's talking about HTML5, and ready or not, you need to get acquainted with this powerful new development in web and application design. Some of its new features are already being implemented by existing browsers, and much more is around the corner.Written by developers who have been using the new language for the past year in their work, this book shows you how to start adapting the language now to realize its benefits on today's browsers. Rather than being just an academic investigation, it concentrates on the practical—the problems HTML5 can solve for you right away. By following the book's hands-on HTML5 code examples you'll learn:
new semantics and structures to help your site become richer and more accessible

how to apply the most important JavaScript APIs that are already implemented

the uses of native multimedia for video and audio

techniques for drawing lines, fills, gradients, images and text with canvas

how to build more intelligent web forms

implementation of new storage options and web databases

how geolocation works with HTML5 in both web and mobile applications
All the code from this book (and more) is available at www.introducinghtml5.com.********There appear to be intermittent problems with the first printing of Introducing HTML5. If you have one of these copies, please email us at ask@peachpit.com with a copy of your receipt (from any reseller), and we'll either provide access to the eBook or send you another copy of the print book -- whichever you prefer. jQuery 1.4 Animation Techniques: Beginners Guide ReviewThere are many ways to learn jQuery. There are examples and tutorials all over the web. But, I found myself reading several tutorials and downloading several examples just to understand one jQuery effect. That's when I decided to turn to the printed page and checked Amazon for the latest books to get the background knowledge needed to create my own jQuery animations.
jQuery 1.4 Animation Techniques Beginner's Guide, by Dan Wellman, caught my eye because it took a different approach to teaching jQuery. The author concentrates on the animations one can create with the jQuery UI Library, CSS3 and the HTML5 canvas element. Most of the examples in the book are for web user interface elements and the sample code can be downloaded from the publisher's website.
The book starts with the simple built-in jQuery effects and builds up to creating custom animations. Although jQuery claims to be browser independent, the author does cover some of the work-arounds needed for the Internet Explorer browser.
As you would expect, the book begins with an introduction to jQuery and the most common built-in jQuery effects. The author teaches how to use a template as the base file for all the examples covered in the book, which is very helpful to the beginner when creating the first animation example in the book, a preloader. From simple animations, the author moves on to sequencing several animations, queue management and creating jQuery plugins.
Next, he discusses the jQuery UI and how to use this library of 14 effects to extend jQuery methods. At this point, the author gives a few examples of animating graphics. I especially like the bouncing ball and the window blinds that opened with a click of the mouse. Moving progressively to more complex animations, the author covers full page animations such as a stick man stop-motion walk cycle, mouse proximity events and an interactive game based on the canvas element.
Although this is a beginner's book on jQuery animation, the author assumes the reader has a working knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, CSS and some jQuery. I have to admit that I was hoping for more coverage of complex jQuery animations but this book would be good for anyone new to jQuery animation.
Dan Wellman is an author of several books and a web developer for the Design Haus agency.*Packt Publishing provided a review copy to me free of charge.jQuery 1.4 Animation Techniques: Beginners Guide OverviewAll the concepts in the book are explained in a simple, easy to understand, step-by-step manner. There are plenty of examples and images used in this book, with the images properly explained. Written with a friendly and engaging approach, this Packt Beginner's guide is designed to be placed alongside the computer as your guide and mentor to create attractive web page animations using jQuery. This book is written for web designers and front-end developers who already have good knowledge of HTML and CSS, and some experience with jQuery. If you want to learn how to animate the user interface of your web applications with jQuery, then this book is for you.
