jQuery: Visual QuickStart Guide ReviewI'm glad I bought this book. It serves as it's title suggests, giving you a quick, painless start to using jQuery. The book's general layout is to use a single page to show you the functionality of a single jQuery method. Don't expect to see any in-depth description with this book. You'll definitely want to read another or do some online work after reading it, but after you finish this book, you will realize that jQuery is not as intimidating as you may have thought, which will make your reading of subsequent jQuery books easier.
I didn't expect this to be an entirely satisfying reference on the subject, but what really irritated me is that this book is chock full of errors that should have been caught before it was published. Most of the errors won't prevent the scripts from running, and in the cases where it would, if you have any experience with html, you'll realize the error as you're typing the script. For instance, for most of the first half of the book, a script is used that creates a button so that you can test the jQuery method being covered. Time after time after time, the code for the button didn't include a closing bracket... easy enough to pick up on, but it should have been easy for a technical editor to see also. There are also a few sentences such as: "Here's something else thing you can do with jQuery wrapped sets."
This book is worth buying if you are brand new to jQuery. It will make the other books that are a little bit more heady easier to digest. If you would like to be a technical reviewer, you might want to contact Peachpit Press. Apparently, they need one.jQuery: Visual QuickStart Guide OverviewjQuery is a popular JavaScript library that simplifies event handling, animating, and Ajax interactions for rapid web development. Many companies are using jQuery including: Amazon, Google, Twitter, Bank of America, BBC, ESPN, CBS News, Digg, Reuters, IBM, Netflix, Dell, Oracle, Slashdot, Tecnorati, and Intuit.Even casual web designers, who create web pages for fun, want to add the latest cool effects to their sites, and jQuery--the fast, flexible JavaScript library--is a tool of choice. Just as CSS separates "display" characteristics from the HTML structure, jQuery separates the "behavior" characteristics from the HTML structure. From visual effects, special controls, and Ajax made easy, the jQuery Visual QuickStart Guide will teach readers how to make the most of jQuery using the task-based, step-by-step, visual format they love. It's crammed with examples and there's a special section on widgets.

jQuery 1.4 Animation Techniques: Beginners Guide ReviewThere are many ways to learn jQuery. There are examples and tutorials all over the web. But, I found myself reading several tutorials and downloading several examples just to understand one jQuery effect. That's when I decided to turn to the printed page and checked Amazon for the latest books to get the background knowledge needed to create my own jQuery animations.
jQuery 1.4 Animation Techniques Beginner's Guide, by Dan Wellman, caught my eye because it took a different approach to teaching jQuery. The author concentrates on the animations one can create with the jQuery UI Library, CSS3 and the HTML5 canvas element. Most of the examples in the book are for web user interface elements and the sample code can be downloaded from the publisher's website.
The book starts with the simple built-in jQuery effects and builds up to creating custom animations. Although jQuery claims to be browser independent, the author does cover some of the work-arounds needed for the Internet Explorer browser.
As you would expect, the book begins with an introduction to jQuery and the most common built-in jQuery effects. The author teaches how to use a template as the base file for all the examples covered in the book, which is very helpful to the beginner when creating the first animation example in the book, a preloader. From simple animations, the author moves on to sequencing several animations, queue management and creating jQuery plugins.
Next, he discusses the jQuery UI and how to use this library of 14 effects to extend jQuery methods. At this point, the author gives a few examples of animating graphics. I especially like the bouncing ball and the window blinds that opened with a click of the mouse. Moving progressively to more complex animations, the author covers full page animations such as a stick man stop-motion walk cycle, mouse proximity events and an interactive game based on the canvas element.
Although this is a beginner's book on jQuery animation, the author assumes the reader has a working knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, CSS and some jQuery. I have to admit that I was hoping for more coverage of complex jQuery animations but this book would be good for anyone new to jQuery animation.
Dan Wellman is an author of several books and a web developer for the Design Haus agency.*Packt Publishing provided a review copy to me free of charge.jQuery 1.4 Animation Techniques: Beginners Guide OverviewAll the concepts in the book are explained in a simple, easy to understand, step-by-step manner. There are plenty of examples and images used in this book, with the images properly explained. Written with a friendly and engaging approach, this Packt Beginner's guide is designed to be placed alongside the computer as your guide and mentor to create attractive web page animations using jQuery. This book is written for web designers and front-end developers who already have good knowledge of HTML and CSS, and some experience with jQuery. If you want to learn how to animate the user interface of your web applications with jQuery, then this book is for you.

jQuery Mobile ReviewI thought this book "okay" for getting started with jQuery Mobile. However, I thought this book was going to be more than just a small introduction to jQuery Mobile. Don't get me wrong, it does provide enough information to get you going in developing your jQuery Mobile website, BUT it lacks in proper documentation.
This book was below my expectations for an O'Reilly book. You are better off just going to the jQuery Mobile website, and reading their documentation in all honesty. Beware though, even the jQuery Mobile website documentation isn't all that clear, also. So you will have to experiment.jQuery Mobile Overview

jQuery: Novice to Ninja ReviewI have to agree with other reviews, this is an excellent book to start learning jQuery. Not that there aren't other excellent jQuery books, but the best ones out there are getting a little dated. If you are just starting, not only is this book easy to read and understand, with lots of great examples, but it's also up to date with jQuery version 1.4.
They start with an already functional html site, and then add jQuery to it to spice it up. For all new web developers out there, this is the way to do it! JavaScript/jQuery should be put in last only after you have a functional site, for those people without JavaScript support (especially screen readers for the blind). This book follows best-practices and I commend them for it. It's the book I wish I had when I first tried to learn jQuery. Get it. You won't be disappointed.
It's so easy to 'write' (i.e. copy/paste) bad JavaScript, as the web has been plagued with for so many years. But, as frameworks like jQuery start to gain tremendous popularity, that trend is changing. There really is no sense in 'reinventing the wheel'. Use jQuery, or another framework. What I like about jQuery is that it makes so many things easy, and leverages CSS syntax so you have less to learn.
It seems that this book is selling fast, as of this writing it says 1 to 4 months shipping time! Also, I'm not sure why Sitepoint books tend to have such a small discount on Amazon. Sitepoint likes to get people to buy books direct from them. Not sure why. It seems to be available faster on their web site. I have an eBook version. As of this writing, they are running a 5-for-1 eBook promotion on the Sitepoint web site. But, I got mine through my subscription to Safari Books Online, which I highly recommend.
If you are just starting, or even just want a reference for the jQuery basics, this book is the one to have.jQuery: Novice to Ninja Overview
