Inside Microsoft SharePoint 2010 ReviewI purchase this book with high hopes to learn great deal about SharePoint 2010 development but I got disappointed in every front. I like inside series from Microsoft, and given the fact that the last installment of Inside SharePoint Server 2007 was an epic book I was expecting something similar to say the least.
There are couples of things that just take the credibility away from this book. To start with I don't really understand why authors push Critical Path Training so much, yes the logo on the cover is just the start and whole books is full of un-necessary fluff about the training company. Also the writing style among the author differs so much that I literally felt lost couple of times as I made transition from one chapter to another. Another thing lacking is demonstration and coverage of Visual Studio 2010 Tools for SharePoint 2010, by no means I am expecting snazzy images and step by step guide but at-least reasonable amount of coverage is required because these tools are essential for doing SharePoint 2010 development. You will see few project templates in Chapter 2 but later on there is very little discussion on the topic.
The overall content coverage is another thing that led me down. For example there is whole chapter on ECM (Enterprise Content Management) but not a single chapter on WCM (Web Content Management). Similarly there is not even a single page on creating development environment for SharePoint 2010 development, I initially cannot believe it and try to check index and table of content couple of times before got utterly dejected, seriously how you can leave something as important as setting up the platform for development. The chapters on sandbox and web parts add little value as MSDN articles already cover these in greater detail.

To sum up if you want to get good inside and under the hood coverage of SharePoint 2010 development better to look elsewhere. Frankly I recommend you to read "Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Developer Reference" by MS Press along with "SharePoint 2010 Development with Visual Studio 2010" by Wiley. I am only blaming myself to waste money earlier on this inside book.

With many . NET and SharePoint titles available, Apress released a great piece of work that explains how to use the best of both worlds to build a powerful collaboration platform, being delivered in less time. Even if SharePoint Server is not available in your or your customer's organization, this book is still of great value, as it focuses primarily on the freely available SharePoint 2010 Foundation.
The book starts with an overview of SharePoint's architecture and the way in which it can be utilized from a development point of view. The book zooms in to all architectural levels of SharePoint, and, in subsequent chapters, explains how to utilize the SharePoint API, the new Visual Studio 2010 SharePoint tools, the SharePoint core, the .NET framework (as it applies to SharePoint) and IIS. The SharePoint development platform topics that this book covers include extensibility, document management, Microsoft Office integration, built-in authentication and authorization, SharePoint Designer 2010, Visual Studio 2010 integration, and sandboxed solutions.
Chapter 2 of the book deals with the many kinds of SharePoint solutions, including creating features, workflows, and packaging and deployment using the SharePoint PowerShell commandlets.
The next chapter goes deeper than the regular SharePoint development environment in Visual Studio. In this chapter the relationship between SharePoint, IIS 7 (being 7.0 or 7.5) and the .NET framework is explained. The purpose and functionality of the new and different services (HTTP.sys, WWW, WAS), the various security options - including the new sandboxed solutions, are all there and explained. In the consecutive chapter, the file system and the database usages are explained. Basic design patterns are briefly mentioned; the Provider design pattern, used in many ASP.NET solutions, being one of them.
The theories in the first four chapters are applied in chapter 5 and further. From this point on, the solution building phase starts. The construction of all kinds of web parts, including Silverlight web parts, are carefully explained.
Chapter 6 is all about the new Client Object Model, that can be leveraged both from server side .NET and client side JavaScript. Chapter 7 deals with the new Business Data Catalog and shows various samples on how to work with them, again including a Silverlight solution. Chapter 8 to 10 offer real world business scenario's and shows ways of delivering solutions on a variety of extension levels - varying from `low touch point' to `high touch point' solutions. Subjects like PowerPivot and Azure are covered really well.
Pro ASP.NET SharePoint 2010 Solutions let you be far more productive by showing you how to unleash SharePoint 2010's functionality by including it into your own ASP.NET applications. When reading this book, it's inspiring to see all the opportunities you have at your disposal. Developers that are new to SharePoint development, but also experienced .NET developers who really want to understand what's going on behind the scenes, gain a deeper understanding and will bring their skills rapidly to a higher level. The many references to online resources are very valuable as well. I also recommend this book strongly to collaboration developers, managers and solution architects.
Extending SharePoint is a big thing. Recently, Microsoft and SAP released version 1.0 of Duet Enterprise (see www.duet.com). Duet Enterprise is deployed as add-ons to both SAP and SharePoint 2010. It provides all the technical and functional foundation that's needed to a realize a fully integrated and extendable enterprise. This book helps to understand how to build this.

ASP.NET 4 24-Hour Trainer (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThere are no easy roads for those wanting to get up to speed on new technologies. Many books and websites promise instant gratification, or instant knowledge, via some "easy way." "Stay young with seal fat soap! No effort required!" Or "Learn through osmosis! No thinking required! Just vegetate and let the knowledge seep in like jellyfish slime!" The electromagnetic spectrum bursts with such promises and audacious claims. So who can blame anyone who becomes skeptical at the subtitle "24-hour trainer?" And it doesn't refer to making gelatin spitballs, but to learning ASP.NET. So does the skepticism hold? Can the clueless and nescient learn this complex technology in a mere 24 hours by using this book?
Well, yes and no. Despite Wrox's new rock star theme, this book will only get you so far. And where exactly the 24-hour time frame comes in remains a little mysterious. Nonetheless, the book has plenty of value and will teach anyone quite a bit as long as expectations stay clear. For starters, this book, and accompanying DVD, emphasize process over fundamentals. Each chapter comprises a defined task. For example, the chapter "Master Pages in Web Forms" covers just that and not in great detail. Given this approach, beginners may sometimes find themselves wondering what just happened. Those with some experience or knowledge will probably benefit more.
The book sticks to a pattern. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the topic and ends with a "try it" section that steps through a specific task. Unfortunately, the introductory material often provides a glimpse of the technology. For instance the web.config file receives a lot of attention in this book, but nowhere does the book delineate the file's purpose in any detail. As an introduction this approach works great to a point. But as a way to means to solidify a foundation or to obtain a thorough understanding of the concepts in general it often falls flat. Still, for those who learn best by process, this book could work wonders. And it could serve as a great supplement to more detailed reading. Give it a prolonged glance to see if it works before buying.
The book also doesn't reveal everything in its title. Apart from ASP.NET, the book also covers the relatively new MVC (Model, View, Controller) framework. Those who don't possess the fundamentals may get lost quickly. MVC represents a fairly significant departure from the standard ASP model and the book's cursory introduction to the concepts may not suit everyone. Plus, most of the chapters have "A" and "A" sections that alternate between ASP.NET and ASP.NET MVC. For example, Lesson 19A, "Displaying Data in Web Forms" flows into Lesson 19B, "Displaying Data in MVC." For some, this may just be too much at once. MVC could probably stand a "training" book of its own with a more detailed introduction to its core concepts. jQuery and AJAX also appear in a later chapter and though readers will get waked through some examples of how to use them, the core concepts again receive only a speck of detail. The W3C tutorials may fill in some of the gaps for beginners.
Still, the book has value. Those needing a refresh in the "how to" and not on the fundamentals may find this the perfect resource. Or someone looking for just a taste of ASP without committing to learning the core concepts may also find this a perfect page flapper. More experienced programmers may walk away from this book and be able to start cranking out (simple) websites. Beginners, at least not all of them, may not be so lucky. Absolute beginners may need to find other resources to really understand the construction of a real world ASP.NET application. And no matter how one uses the book it will very likely involve far more than 24 hours of interaction. HTML5 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) ReviewHTML5 Step by StepHTML5 Step by Step is a good introduction to HTML for the complete novice. "Step by Step" is literally the approach taken in the book, with explicit instructions for each action to be taken. I would not hesitate to recommend this as a first text for the business or hobby user; experienced HTML authors or developers looking for cutting-edge HTML5 features should look elsewhere.
The book uses a Microsoft landscape, so the editing tool of choice is Notepad, and the browser absorbing the most attention is Internet Explorer 9. Users of other operating systems can use the text, but they'll need to be savvy enough to translate the Microsoft terminology to their own platform ( which might be beyond the abilities of a true beginner ). Following the example code using Ubuntu and vi, I did not experience any significant problems.
HTML authoring tools are not covered in order to focus on the underlying HTML building blocks.
Since the instructions provided for the accompanying exercises are so explicit, they consume a great deal of print real estate. That does not leave much room for advanced features of HTML5, and you won't find those here. Hence, once you complete the exercises, this isn't a book you'll retain for reference.

I bought Sam's 24-hour handbook, and ran into snags that made me give up. So I bought this handbook by someone who clearly is an experienced author approved by Microsoft. I'm literally going "step by step" and am learning a lot, with a minimum of snags or unclear instructions. Once I've reached the end (it will take awhile because there are 500-plus pages... but luckily I am not under pressure to learn it overnight or in "24 hours"), I'll be pretty savvy, and I'll have a good reference book to use for my own site. Microsoft® ASP.NET and AJAX: Architecting Web Applications (PRO-Developer) ReviewDino is a well respected author and developer. I have read at least five of his books. They range from old school ADO.NET to architecting web applications for the enterprise (highly recommend that read). This book is well written and organized. The content is heavy on the front end as the title suggests. You will explore the kludgy innards of JavaScript. jQuery and many Ajax approaches are also considered. In addition, Dino puts his own personal spin on patterns and processes.
The book starts very well with a background in the Ajax surge. It then jumps into the client side, patterns, binding to the client and ends with RIA's. Overall this is solid and I recommend the read if not quick skimming after the fifth chapter.
However, .NET 4.0 is right around the corner. The client side bindings, more jQuery integration and updated Microsoft Ajax JavaScript libraries will change a lot of how this book approaches Ajax. Therefore, its an interim book for those not looking to move to 4.0 and live in at least the 3.5 world for the foreseeable future.
It delves into Silverlight a bit and. But has no mention of the ground swell of popularity that is ASP.NET MVC and its fairly elegant Ajax approach. One of the highlights is Dino's insight into the pros and cons of partial rendering vs. full scale asynchronous approaches. I have been on an enterprise application where we had to implement the former. He nailed the reasons why.
Read this book if you want a good background in current technologies that are changing at the speed of light. It won't be a gold source for later pick up and review though.Microsoft® ASP.NET and AJAX: Architecting Web Applications (PRO-Developer) Overview

MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-515): Web Applications Development with Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Mcts 70-515 Exam Exam Prep) ReviewWhen I first got this book, I believed it was a good resource because it was published by Microsoft Press and was likely being reviewed my Microsoft to be accurate as a 'Training Kit' for their MCTS Certification Exam.
After reading the book, I am disappointed in Microsoft Press. This book is not properly aligned with the creators of the MCTS Exam Questions to ensure it is a true Self-Study Guide covering all required material to help with passing the Exam.
This book does not adequately prepare you for the MCTS Certification Exam and lacks coverage of all material. As another has mentioned in a review of this book, the book does not cover all content required and includes chapters of material not on the exam (like the AJAX .NET Toolkit). One example of required material that is missing is the 'QueryExtender' that is not even mentioned. jQuery material is also minimal for what is required.
I'm posting this review in hope to provide feedback to Microsoft to help improve their Training Kits for future exams.

Professional ASP.NET Design Patterns ReviewThis is a pretty sharp book. I bought it for 3 reasons. The first was I liked the author's other book Professional Enterprise .NET (Wrox Programmer to Programmer). The second was I wanted to read something about ASP.NET MVC since I don't use it at work. Third, I like to read all new pattern books because it is the only way I can keep them fresh in my mind.
This book is written extremely well. It starts with an introduction to the S.O.L.I.D. design principles and an introduction to design patterns. It then covers every layer of a common enterprise level ASP.NET application and shows the use of patterns in each layer (Business, Service, Data Access, Presentation, and User Experience). The book covers a ton of patterns including both GOF design patterns and Fowler's Enterprise Application Design patterns.
Design patterns covered include Factory, Decorator, Command, Chain of Responsibility, Template, State, Strategy, Composite, and Facade. Messaging patterns such as Document Message, Request-Response, Reservation, and the Idempotent pattern are covered. Enterprise patterns include Lazy Loading, Identity Map, Unit of Work, and the Query Object. User interface patterns include Model-View-Controller, PageController, Model-View-Presenter, and Front Controller.
The third part of the book includes a case study that builds out an E-Commerce store from soup to nuts. They start with requirements and end with a final product you can download from Codeplex.
The downloadable code is very well organized and usable. As mentioned above the authors have also posted a separate download called ASP.NET MVC 2 Case Study Starter Kit on Codeplex which includes the case study sample project covered in the third part of the book.
One of the things I really like about the book is that it includes the use of tools like AutoMapper, NHibernate, StructureMap, Entity Framework, and Castle MonoRail. It also includes patterns using JQuery and Json.
All in all this book accomplished what I had hoped it would. It is a great book on patterns that every programmer should read. Professional ASP.NET MVC 3 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewGot the Kindle version.
As someone who's already worked on a project with the first version of MVC a couple of years back, this was a good refresher and a quick way to get to know all the new MVC3 features. This includes: Razor for Views; Validation mechanisms are much easier now, there used to be way too many options to pick from; jQuery Templates; NuGet etc.
Favorite Chapters:
- Ch.7 on Security, it's very well written with quick and easy to use solutions. Great stuff! MVC 1 & 2 developers need to fix a security hole in the default authentication template if you've used it.
- Ch.12 on Testing, good examples and valuable tips towards the end.
Least favorite Chapters are:
- Ch. 11 on Dependency Injection, it's extremely abstract and that's perfectly fine for the first section given the design pattern discussion, but it becomes harder to follow subsequently with not even a single attempt to show an IoC container in action with some real code. It just doesn't seem to accomplish its intended goal, unfortunately this chapter is poorly done, needs better examples and better ways to describe the problem it's trying to solve. It's a shame since this is a key concept for building complex MVC solutions.
- Ch. 9 on Routing, it's definitely more of a "under the hood" reference type chapter, doesn't mean it isn't important, just boring to read through.
Some chapters are missing the full source code but you could just google/download the MVC Music Store application which has most of it. Also, some examples include NuGet packages which is pretty convenient to load and run within Visual Studio 2010. Another really minor issue is that chapters probably need a bit more accompanying graphics/images which help set the context than just code/text for long stretches such as the AJAX chapter.
Worth mentioning that the book feels more like a reference book rather than a walk-through with step-by-step instructions so some sections however essential can make you want to skip some pages.
Overall, the book does what it's supposed to as far as new MVC 3 features; it will not however prepare you enough for any Production ready solutions i.e. solution architecture is MIA.
I would've liked a chapter on how to structure enterprise applications which as you'll find out are quite different from a base application like MVC Music Store. A couple of sample approaches would go a long way. JavaScript Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) ReviewThis book is a good beginner level Java Script text. It covers all the basics rather well and comes with a nice disc full of example files. However there is very little coverage on DOM implementation. For me it seems almost pointless to use Java Script without the DOM. If you are looking to actually implement Java Script with lots of form access and manipulation, then this is not a good book to get.
