Rapid Application Development With CakePHP (Volume 1) ReviewI bought this book for the kindle. I would not say that it is formatted with the Kindle in mind, but it is readable. Screenshots are too small to see.
The material covered is really the basic highlights for CakePHP. I have several books, and this author does not dive very deep into the code or the reasons why he is doing certain things. The author does conform to the standards, which are important for CakePHP and explains these well. The author assumes the reader has a firm understanding of PHP and OOP.
In spite of the shortcomings, I would have to say this is a nice quick reference to have handy on your Kindle. If you want to know more about the nuts and bolts of CakePHP and have more time to read a longer book, check out the book from PackIT.
I gave the book four stars. It is a quick read, does not cost much and the Author (who is clearly experienced in the technology) gives several important insights into programming with CakePHP that I have not read in other texts.Rapid Application Development With CakePHP (Volume 1) OverviewThis book was written by a web developer for web developers. In the final chapter, we will take all that we've learned and create one final large project.During this process, I will instill my knowledge in taking a project from start to finish including creating a scope of work to ensure we have accomplished our target goals.By the end of this book, you should be able to build fully functional websites using CakePHP. Hopefully, you should also be able to cut your development time at least in half, if not more!

Pro Android 2 ReviewPro Android 2 is aimed at developers who want to take Android to the next level. This large book serves as a manual for how to do almost anything on Android. The book starts by giving a refresher of the platform, and then quickly dives into explaining XML files, GUI layout and Views, and working with mapping. Building and consuming services are explained, giving the first example of working with Apache's HttpClient libs that I have seen in an Android book. Examples of working with the Telephony API, searching, using gestures, you name it. The book even offers an alternative way of creating applications using Titanium Mobile. Finally time is spent explaining the Android Marketplace and things you should know before making your application public.
The information contained in this book is at the same time enlightening and overwhelming. In just the first few chapters, I had already found better ways to handle several things in my own Android applications. That alone was worth the time spent reading this book.
Although the book was written by three different authors, I found the writing style and flow of the book well done and congruous.
The book explains that the intended audience should have previous exposure to developing on the Android platform and to Java, and they mean it. While an introduction is given to the various parts of an Android application, a new developer wouldn't be able to get enough understanding to use this book as a starting point for developing Android applications. Previous exposure to any number of beginning Android books is recommended before you attempt to tackle this one. The publisher suggest you start with Beginning Android 2.
If you are an Android developer, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. If you spend 2 minutes flipping through the various chapters, I promise you will walk out of the book store with Pro Android 2 in hand. My rating, 5 stars. The book delivers exactly what it advertises and does so in a manner that is enjoyable to read and very helpful.

This book is a detailed look at all aspects of application development on Google's Mobile OS and Development Platform including detailed discussion of the APIs and how to use them.This book focuses on giving developers the essential tools and examples required to make viable commercial applications work on mobile devices and even Netbooks.

Pro Smartphone Cross-Platform Development: iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Android Development and Distribution ReviewI bought this book because I was extremely impressed by the Apress iPhone books. This book is absolutely nothing like them. The layout of the book looks shoddy and rushed. The first page of one chapter appears to be from a wholly different book. Nothing about the presentation inspired much confidence in me.
Then comes the content. The book is short, only around 250 pages. Of this, the first 80 pages are simply a collection of Hello World examples for each platform. The sort of thing you could easily find on the internet with a little googling. The next section is the cross platform frameworks. Rhodes is given 50 pages of solid good coverage. Next comes PhoneGap which gets 20 pages of description. None of that 20 pages is particularly good. It amounts to little more than a brief survey of the material. The biggest disappointment is the Titanium Mobile chapter. It's seven pages long and tells you how to write hello world.
The rest of the book is a description of various JavaScript frameworks that target mobile devices.
This book is amazingly disappointing, and essentially worthless to me. I bought it to learn about cross platform development, and I got a collection of tutorials that I could probably have found with google. None of the code is very good or useful, and the presentation is terrible on top of that. If this book were about $10, it would be a worthwhile buy. $20 might be acceptable if you are also interested mobile javascript frameworks. Right now Amazon is charging $50, which I would consider theft.
Read the back of the book, then use google to research all its topics. You'll get better material. concrete5 Beginner's Guide ReviewThis is very nice book about C5 CMS which covers a lot of ground. It starts with the installation chapter, followed by explaining basis working with C5 (adding/editing blocks, pages etc.)
Chapter 3 deals with the permission system and in chapter 4 is dedicated to add-ons (C5's plugins) which extend basic functionality of C5.
Chapter 5 gives very detailed explanation how to convert HTML template for C5 CMS. There are lot of details provided and reader is destined to succeed. :-)
After that there are chapters about customizing block layouts, advanced navigation, creating one's own add-on block, writing a package for C5...even writing dashboard extensions is covered.
Pretty impressive for a 300p book, language is easy to follow and I highly recommend it for every C5 user who consider that official docs is not very well structured.
Why not 5 stars?
Well, my complain is that at some point the author changes in high speed and there is not, imho, enough explanation of 'why' but the reader is just given 'how'.
However, I must admit that it is probably due to the way this Packt 's "Beginner's Guid" series is 'designed' and author has taken maximum from the given 'field'.concrete5 Beginner's Guide OverviewThis book is part of Packt's Beginner's Guide series. I switched from Catalyst because of the community support. This is by far the best introduction to someone new to Rails and even web development. Yii 1.1 Application Development Cookbook ReviewAlexander Makarov not only is an active member of Yii's core development team but also a vivid contributor to its community and put a lot of experience into this excellent book. I am using Yii for quite a while now and thought I knew some tricks but this book really helps you getting a deep understanding of the framework's functionalities. It's not written for beginners but a very inspiring reference for intermediate Yii developers and presents a lot of solutions for everyday scenarios that aren't explained in much detail in the framework's wiki: Advanced profiling to find bottlenecks, customized logging functionalities, deployment using different environments (development and production versions), using customized folder structures, preventing XSS and CSRF attacks, using external code libraries (Zend, Kohana, PEAR) and getting the best out of existing Zii components (grid views, list views and data providers). One of the nice things about this book is that the topics are always accompanied by useful real world examples which - from a developer's point of view - makes them really easy to understand. PhoneGap Beginner's Guide ReviewI bought my Kindle in June 2009 and have been using it pretty much non-stop since then for both fiction and non-fiction (mostly tech books). The only time I ever contacted Amazon for a refund on a Kindle book was with "PhoneGap Beginner's Guide". It is so riddled with incomprehensible sentences that I can only suspect the publisher skipped any serious editing in the rush to get it to market.
I'm not talking about technically difficult sentences. This book (or at least the first few chapters) is full of read-them-six-times-and-still-don't-understand-them grammatical train-wrecks.
For the record, I make part of my living writing instructional books and material. I do not leave a review like this lightly. I understand the consequences of bad feedback. I also have no doubt that Mr. Lunny is a decent guy. Based on his role at Nitobi, he's probably a thousand times smarter than me. His editor, though, should be fired.
