Pro Smartphone Cross-Platform Development: iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Android Development and Distribution ReviewI bought this book because I was extremely impressed by the Apress iPhone books. This book is absolutely nothing like them. The layout of the book looks shoddy and rushed. The first page of one chapter appears to be from a wholly different book. Nothing about the presentation inspired much confidence in me.
Then comes the content. The book is short, only around 250 pages. Of this, the first 80 pages are simply a collection of Hello World examples for each platform. The sort of thing you could easily find on the internet with a little googling. The next section is the cross platform frameworks. Rhodes is given 50 pages of solid good coverage. Next comes PhoneGap which gets 20 pages of description. None of that 20 pages is particularly good. It amounts to little more than a brief survey of the material. The biggest disappointment is the Titanium Mobile chapter. It's seven pages long and tells you how to write hello world.
The rest of the book is a description of various JavaScript frameworks that target mobile devices.
This book is amazingly disappointing, and essentially worthless to me. I bought it to learn about cross platform development, and I got a collection of tutorials that I could probably have found with google. None of the code is very good or useful, and the presentation is terrible on top of that. If this book were about $10, it would be a worthwhile buy. $20 might be acceptable if you are also interested mobile javascript frameworks. Right now Amazon is charging $50, which I would consider theft.
Read the back of the book, then use google to research all its topics. You'll get better material. The book really is that bad.Pro Smartphone Cross-Platform Development: iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Android Development and Distribution OverviewMobile platform development is a dominating force, and a huge number of developers are focusing more of their time on creating applications for each of the major platforms - iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Android. With cross platform development architecture and tools, these applications can be built in such a way that a single code base can run on all platforms. The book covers architecture, development, and distribution of native and cross platform applications, and is one of the first resources available for developers interested in extending their applications across platforms.

iPhone & iPad Web Design For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) ReviewI don't know what the other reviewer was talking about. This book really doesn't concentrate on Dreamweaver; it actually uses a wide variety of tools to teach you how to design for the iPhone and iPad. I found it to actually be fun to read (and when is the last time you actually said that about a book that teaches you something techy?). Highly recommended - I'm already building my own iPad sites.iPhone & iPad Web Design For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) OverviewA full-color guide to designing cutting-edge web sites for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch!
Apple's touchscreen devices have created worldwide techno-lust, conjuring a record-breaking market out of thin air.
iPads, iPhones, and iPods are so in demand that they outsell every other device in their categories. If your website is not designed to take advantage of the extraordinary new capabilities of these popular devices, then you will miss out on an increasingly important part of your audience.
With all the focus on the App Store (thanks to the ubiquitous "There's an App for that…" ad campaign), you could be forgiven for overlooking the fact that the single most popular app on the iPhone and iPad is Safari. That's right. The humble web browser that comes installed on every iOS device, ready to surf at the flick of a finger.
This is where iPhone & iPad Web Design For Dummies comes in. Based on real-world experience, this guide (written in a language that real human beings can read) shows you how to use HTML5, CSS3, and jQuery to produce interactive websites that will delight your users and keep them coming back for more.
You'll discover how to plan the perfect mobile web experience, create interactivity and multimedia, test and optimize your creations, and publish and market your final design with iPhone & iPad Web Design For Dummies!

Beginning Web Development for Smartphones: Developing Web Applications with PHP, MSQL, and jQTouch Review
As a smart phone novice, I was looking for instruction in the area of iphone apps and Mr. Hirwani's Introduction to jQTouch is just fabulous!
His use of a series of small applications to explain different themes, the addition of panels and highlighting of information, tips for obtaining and displaying user information, etc. provides enough introductory knowledge to easily work with jQTouch. I especially liked the way, the sample Book Store web application is created step by step.
The creation of server side and client side database tables is nicely covered and accompanied with running PHP scripts. The use of these scripts for every step is quite helpful in understanding the topic(s).
Additionally, the list of different functions for accessing MySQL from PHP is very informative and greatly assists in understanding the code of the application.
AJAX technique is used for accessing information from server side database table to make the web application quite responsive.
Thanks to Introduction to jQTouch, I am now confident enough to create my own web application for Smartphones.Beginning Web Development for Smartphones: Developing Web Applications with PHP, MSQL, and jQTouch OverviewIf you've ever wanted to learn how to develop web applications for mobile devices, Beginning Web Development for Smartphones is for you! Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript: Making App Store Apps Without Objective-C or Cocoa ReviewI am a developer, but I know nothing about the iPhone or iPhone app development, so this book sounded perfect for me. It's a very quick read: I read the whole book (< 160 pages) on a 3 hour flight to Boston. The prose is clear with very little fluff, but did I learn much about iPhone apps with HTML, CSS and Javascript? This raises the big question that was not clear to me when I started reading: who is this book for? It is clear that this book is not for someone who has no prior knowledge of HTML or CSS, or JavaScript. The tutelage on HTML and CSS is razor-thin. If you do not understand these languages, your head will swim very quickly. I have worked with both languages for a couple years, and yet I felt pretty unsatisfied with the skeletal explanations of some of the examples. The Javascript coverage was even more spartan. I am not a Javascript person; I know just enough to tweak simple code I have found on the Internet. I have no clue to some of the book's example code and what it means. Overall, I found this book was not written to be a tutorial at all. It is a bare introduction to the iPhone environment for a developer who has considerable experience in these languages. And to Stark's credit, he does does state in the Preface that this book is for people with "basic experience reading and writing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (jQuery in particular)". I was not aware of this assumption, so be aware that you may have some rough going. On the up-side, however, there is some very interesting material in this book. I did learn something about the iPhone development environment, and the iPhone style of presentation. Now I know to look into Cocoa, jQuery and JQTouch. I also have to credit Stark for exactly limiting his presentation to provide a development option to Objective-C and submitting to the Apple Store. His last two chapters really interested me. Using PhoneGap to convert an iPhone web app to a native app was pretty thorough. Doing this conversion makes two distribution options available to the developer. And once your application is coverted, Stark's last chapter on "Submitting Your App to iTunes" really tied together some loose ends for me. Overall, I found this little book pretty helpful. It may not merit a second reading, but I have to offer it this praise: it has given me a foundation to start learning more detail, including writing in Objective-C.Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript: Making App Store Apps Without Objective-C or Cocoa Overview
What people are saying about Building iPhone Apps w/ HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

"The future of mobile development is clearly web technologies like CSS, HTML and JavaScript. Jonathan Stark shows you how to leverage your existing web development skills to build native iPhone applications using these technologies." --John Allsopp, author and founder of Web Directions

"Jonathan's book is the most comprehensive documentation available for developing web applications for mobile Safari. Not just great tech coverage, this book is an easy read of purely fascinating mobile tidbits in a fun colloquial style. Must have for all PhoneGap developers." -- Brian LeRoux, Nitobi Software

It's a fact: if you know HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, you already have the tools you need to develop your own iPhone apps. With this book, you'll learn how to use these open source web technologies to design and build apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch on the platform of your choice-without using Objective-C or Cocoa.

Device-agnostic mobile apps are the wave of the future, and this book shows you how to create one product for several platforms. You'll find guidelines for converting your product into a native iPhone app using the free PhoneGap framework. And you'll learn why releasing your product as a web app first helps you find, fix, and test bugs much faster than if you went straight to the App Store with a product built with Apple's tools.

Build iPhone apps with tools you already know how to use
Learn how to make an existing website look and behave like an iPhone app
Add native-looking animations to your web app using jQTouch
Take advantage of client-side data storage with apps that run even when the iPhone is offline
Hook into advanced iPhone features -- including the accelerometer, geolocation, and vibration -- with JavaScript
Submit your applications to the App Store with Xcode

HTML5 Mobile Websites: Turbocharging HTML5 with jQuery Mobile, Sencha Touch, and Other Frameworks ReviewI'm returning this book tonight on the way home, am very disappointed.
I downloaded the code from visualizetheweb.com, the 1st project in chapter 2 does not correspond to any project I downloaded. The author leaves out many important details on where to start placing html, for example he has an example of creating a but doesn't tell you if you should place that in the Section tag, outside the section or what? There are numerous example of this. Also, he just writes "View it in your favorite html5 browser. IE9 and Chrome render it very differently and neither one is right. A walk though on using a smart phone emulator would have been nice. There has to be better books than this out there...HTML5 Mobile Websites: Turbocharging HTML5 with jQuery Mobile, Sencha Touch, and Other Frameworks Overview

Professional XMPP Programming with JavaScript and jQuery (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewI want to preface this review by stating that I read this book without working through much of the code, as I was doing a compare/contrast between XMPP and AMQP over the holidays.
That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the author's presentation, and this was a standout book from Wrox for me, as they've improved the quality of their paper (thicker and now white), typesetting (smaller margins), and I suppose even the use of a graphic for the cover (as opposed to the author's picture) was well-received ...
The author is clearly well-versed in XMPP, and the introduction was very effective at getting me up to speed on using XMPP in an immediately sense. The chapters built upon one another in complexity, and I never felt lost, or had to re-read along the way.
Overall, I thought this book was effective, and the author's style made for an enjoyable read - one that wasn't terribly dry and at once didn't feel self-indulgent ...Professional XMPP Programming with JavaScript and jQuery (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewCreate real-time, highly interactive apps quickly with the powerful XMPP protocol
